But despite joking it looked so heavy it might contain “a body”, the unsuspecting Good Samaritans could never have predicted the horrors hidden inside. When officers opened the blood-soaked bag, they discovered a dismembered and decapitated human torso.
In a second nearby case, police found the butchered remains of another victim which Mosquera had planned to toss into the Avon Gorge. The grisly discovery sparked a manhunt for Colombian porn star Mosquera who instantly fled the scene.

And it also unlocked a harrowing story of sexual depravity and financial greed that led to a double murder. Hours earlier Mosquera had battered and stabbed Paul Longworth and Albert Alfonso to death before decapitating and chopping up their bodies.
Today, ahead of the broadcast of The Bodies on the Bridge documentary, detectives revealed they initially feared it could have been a gay hate crime – or even a drugs cartel hit. And the couple’s friends told how they were left devastated by the murders and questioned what drove a man to carry out such brutality.
Det Insp Neil Meade, from Avon and Somerset Police, told the documentary: “Those officers that were deployed that night to that bridge, no doubt their worst nightmares came true. We don’t get decapitated, dismembered bodies in suitcases, ever. ”

To the outside world, Mr Alfonso, 62, and Mr Longworth, 71, were the perfect couple. They tied the knot at Fulham Town Hall after same sex marriages became legal and spent their lives caring for each other. But unbeknown to those closest to them, Mr Alfonso harboured a warped fetish for “extreme” online pornography.
Mr Alfonso satisfied his sexual obsessions by paying Mosquera – who sold pornographic videos and images from his home 5,000 miles away in Medellin. In a matter of months, Mr Alfonso had transferred Mosquera in excess of £5,000.
Over time Mosquera pretended to be friends with the couple – but was secretly plotting to steal their £400,000 London home and life savings. After a number of trips to see him in Colombia, the couple invited Mosquera to stay in their home in Shepherd’s Bush, west London.

Even before he landed, he had started researching the value of their home. In the coming days, he downloaded Mr Alfonso’s bank details and passwords and searched Facebook Marketplace for a chest freezer and an “industrial blender”.
Other internet searches included “serial killers of London” and “Jack the Ripper film”. On July 11 2024 after Mr Alfonso went to work, Mosquera pounced on his partner, shattering his skull with nine hammer blows.
He put his body in a storage space under the couple’s bed before going online to arrange his flight home. When Mr Alfonso returned at 7.45pm, Mosquera led him to the bedroom to make a sex tape.

Jurors were played the video showing Mosquera approaching Mr Alfonso with a knife as the victim knelt naked on the floor. Mosquera plunged a knife into Mr Alfonso’s neck, stabbing him 13 times, asking: “Do you like it?’ He then forced the victim on to the bed and slit his throat.
Horrific footage shows Albert’s final moments as he’s butchered by Mosquera on camera. Det Chief Insp Ollie Stride, from the Metropolitan Police, said: “You’re thinking that’s brilliant evidence for us, but this was really close up, cinema quality footage, and was a really horrendous thing to watch, and probably the worst thing I’d seen in my career so far.”
He said: “The video starts with Albert and Mosquera having sex and then we see Mosquera pull the knife to commit the murder. Albert obviously hadn’t realised what’s happening. He managed to overpower Mosquera for quite a few seconds, then Mosquera takes back control and stabs him repeatedly.”

Det Insp Meade said: “A couple of things struck me, how quickly it happened, but also how brutal the attack was. It’s one of those videos you watch it and it never really leaves you.”
Initially detectives struggled to understand what had triggered the murders. Det Chief Insp Stride: “We had no idea what the motive for the murders was, so one of the considerations or hypotheses we were looking at was, was this a hate crime?”
He added:”[Mosquera] being a Colombian national, was that linked to the cartels and the drug trade?” But it soon became clear Mosquera was driven by money. Within minutes of killing Mr Alfonso, he began riding his accounts.

Det Chief Insp Stride said: “You can still hear Albert breathing his last breaths and Mosquera is logging into bank accounts and searching financial information for Albert and Paul. It did not seem like the actions of somebody who’d just committed a horrific, brutal murder.”
Mosquera hid the couple’s heads and hands in a chest freezer and paid a courier to transport the suitcases to Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol. But it was there his plan fell apart. A passerby called police after spotting blood dribbling from the suitcases – which Mosquera claimed contained car parts.
He fled but a label on the trunk identified Mr Alfonso’s home address and cops swarmed the property. Det Chief Insp Stride said: “I’ve dealt with many murders in my career and I think this is certainly the most horrific, the most brutal I’ve dealt with personally.

“From the post mortem, it was established that there were nine hammer blows to the back of Paul’s head that were the cause of his death and then were some defensive wounds he had on him as well, where he’d tried to fight back.
“And Albert had 13 stab wounds to the torso and arms and a further nine wounds to the face as well. It was a really, really brutal attack. One of the worst, most horrific attacks I’ve seen.”
Mosquera claimed he was the victim of an abusive relationship, groomed and raped by Mr Alfonso. He said he stabbed Mr Alfonso in self-defence after watching him kill his partner.

But jurors convicted him of the double murder in just five hours. He was sentenced to 42 years in prison in October last year. Despite the verdict, Mr Alfonso and Mr Longworth’s friends are still haunted by their murder.
Gill Woolfson, who first met Mr Longworth in the 1990s when they worked for the Savoy Hotel Group, said: There’s so many unanswered questions. If his purpose had been to steal what assets they had, that’s bad enough, but to do what he did, in the way that he did it, I don’t understand.”
She added: “How this could happen to people like that, I don’t know. I do not understand, and I would like to understand. I cannot conceive of that kind of thing happening. It’s not within my sphere of consciousness, sphere of knowledge, sphere of anything.

“I felt great sadness, great sadness. Very, very angry with Albert for bringing this monster into their home, but I think it’s important to remember them both as the interesting, fun, kind, nice people that I knew.
“Albert may have had his sexual quirks that I don’t know about or understand, but he was a decent person when I knew him.”
Meanwhile Mr Longworth’s friend Patrick Corkerry, who drank with him in their local pub, said: “Why did he [Mosquera] it? Why didn’t he just go back to Colombia? Why did he have to kill them? Especially chopping them up. What kind of a man would do that?”
What is clear is that Mosquera’s harrowing crime was of such brutality it shocked those who sat through his trial. Ned Parker, executive producer at Longwave Studios which made the new documentary and which is best known for the Netflix series “I Am A Killer”, said: There’s something still very enigmatic about [Mosquera[.
“What led him to think that this was a plan that was going to work or what led him to do it? You’ve got to consider, does somebody get to his age and then suddenly kill two people for the first time?
“Mosquera comes from a difficult area, a violent area, so is this something that he’s been de-sensitised to? Is this something that he’s had direct experience of? We don’t know and that’s just speculation. But it does seem unusual that he would do this from nowhere.”
