Plumber shot dead after reporting being followed in Thomastown

A father has been left heartbroken after his 22-year-old son was shot dead on Father’s Day.

Daniel Hussein was shot and killed near the HR Uren Reserve on Victoria Dr in Thomastown, north Melbourne, about 7.30pm on Sunday.

Among the dozens of family and friends who raced to the scene was Hussein’s father who described his son as a good soul who rarely got into any trouble.

“My son was killed on Father’s Day and my birthday,” he told 7NEWS.

The heartbreak felt by the family is only compounded as Hussein was just months away from getting married.

Hussein’s father said a black Porsche with no license plates was following his son in the moments before gunfire rang out through the suburban street.

The young man’s uncle took to social media on Monday morning, saying he “never imagined that I would have to say goodbye to you first”.

“I still cannot believe you are gone. I still cannot understand that I will never see your smile again, never hear your voice, never watch you walk through that door again,” he said.

“The pain is enormous. The grief is beyond words.

“You were not only my nephew. You were a piece of my heart. A part of my life.

“A child I helped carry into this world, and someone I thought would be there until the end of mine.”

The shooting took place near Lalor United Football Club, where multiple junior matches had been played earlier on Sunday.

Officers cordoned off the street as part of an ongoing investigation. A red ute was seen being towed from the scene soon after.

Crime scene tape was taken down by detectives about 5.30am on Monday, with what is believed to be blood stains visible in the car park.

No arrests have been made and police have urged anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers.
