The family of the three-year-old boy who was seriously injured after allegedly being thrown into a crocodile enclosure at a Cambridgeshire zoo have shared a heartbreaking update on his recovery, revealing the toddler has already undergone five major operations and still faces at least two more surgeries.
More than two weeks after the terrifying incident at Johnsons Zoo in Huntingdon, the boy remains in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, where his parents say they have been “living” while doctors continue fighting to save the full use of his arms and hands.
A Day at the Zoo Turned Into a Nightmare
The incident happened on June 18, when the three-year-old was allegedly thrown approximately 15 feet over a safety barrier into an enclosure housing at least 15 crocodiles and alligators.
According to investigators, the child first landed on a concrete walkway, suffering serious injuries including a broken arm and pelvis before ending up in the water.
Authorities believe he was then bitten by either a Nile crocodile or a saltwater crocodile before being rescued.
Police later arrested a 30-year-old man from Norfolk on suspicion of attempted murder. Officers said the suspect, who reportedly has learning difficulties and had been visiting the zoo with carers, was later released on bail while investigations continue.
Five Operations Completed—With More Still Ahead
In an emotional statement posted on a fundraising page, the boy’s parents revealed the scale of the medical treatment their son has already endured.
“We have been living at the hospital for two weeks now and our son has undergone five surgeries.”
The family said the coming weeks remain uncertain, with doctors preparing for complex nerve reconstruction surgery while continuing to assess the long-term damage to his arms, wrists and hands.
They admitted they still do not know how much function their son will eventually regain.
The fundraising campaign has now raised more than £25,000, helping cover living expenses while both parents remain away from work to stay by their son’s bedside.
Zoo Owners Jumped Into the Enclosure
The owners of Johnsons Zoo, Andy and Tracey Johnson, described the incident as one of the most traumatic moments in the zoo’s history.
According to the zoo, Tracey Johnson immediately climbed into the enclosure to reach the injured child before Andy Johnson and their son Edward joined the rescue effort.
Within minutes, staff had pulled the boy to safety and began administering first aid until emergency services and the MAGPAS Air Ambulance arrived.
The zoo praised both its employees and emergency responders for their rapid actions, saying everyone involved did everything possible to save the child.
New Investigation Adds Another Twist
As the boy continues his recovery, another investigation has begun after it emerged that up to 40 NHS staff may have accessed his confidential medical records without authorization.
Hospital officials have warned that any employee found to have viewed the child’s records without a legitimate reason could face disciplinary action.
Meanwhile, detectives continue investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and whether further criminal charges will follow.
For the young boy’s parents, however, the focus remains entirely on helping their son recover after an ordeal that has already changed their family’s lives forever.
