A worker has died in a mining accident in the NSW Hunter Valley.

Glencore confirmed the death at the United Wambo Joint Venture Open Cut mine, about 80 kilometres north-west of Newcastle, on Monday afternoon.

The miner described the accident as a “mobile equipment incident” on Monday, without giving any more information about exact timing or what happened.

“Our sincere condolences go out to the worker’s family, friends and colleagues,” Glencore Coal Australia chief executive Peter Sharpe said.

“This is tragic news for our entire workforce. Our immediate focus is on providing support to the worker’s family and our employees.”

Mining operations were being suspended, the company said.

Police, who were called to the crash on Watt Street, Warkworth, just before 1pm, said a man believed to be in his 50s was struck by a truck

NSW Minerals Council chief executive Stephen Galilee said the whole industry was mourning the death.

“This tragedy highlights the hazards faced by those working in our industry and is a sombre reminder of why the safety of our workforce must always be our number one priority,” he said.

“The thoughts of tens of thousands of miners across NSW will tonight be with the family and colleagues of the deceased, and also with the Hunter mining community at this difficult time.”

Minerals Council of Australia chief executive Tania Constable said it and the broader industry would keep working to eliminate fatalities.

“The Minerals Council of Australia wants to express its condolences to the family, friends and workmates of a mining worker who has died after a mobile equipment incident today at the United Wambo Joint Venture coal operation in the Hunter Valley in NSW,” she said.

“The MCA also thanks the emergency services personnel who responded to this incident.

“Safety remains the highest priority for our industry, and any loss of life is a stark reminder of the critical importance of our ongoing efforts to ensure every worker returns home safely.”

Emergency services were on scene following the incident.
