Vehicles Were in a Million Pieces: Witness Reveals Hor-ror Scene as Police Release Fresh Crash Details
New details about an “horrific” highway crash that killed two men and critically injured a child and woman have been revealed by police.
Major Crash detectives are investigating the cause of a head-on collision on the North West Coastal Hwy at Hamelin Pool, near Shark Bay in WA, on Monday morning.
Police have confirmed the 60-year-old male driver of a RAM ute towing a caravan and a 45-year-old man driving a Toyota Landcruiser both died at the scene.
A 12-year-old boy and a woman in her 50s, both passengers in the RAM, were critically injured in the crash.
The injured pair were flown to Jandakot Airport by the Royal Flying Doctor Service and transferred to Perth Children’s Hospital and Royal Perth Hospital, respectively, where they are now in a serious but stable condition.
Another four injured people were assessed by paramedics and taken to Monkey Mia Airport before being flown back to WA’s capital.
A stretch of highway between Overlander Roadhouse and Billabong Roadhouse remained closed on Tuesday morning, but has been opened up with a 40km/h speed reduction in place, according to Main Roads WA.
“Another horrific event on Western Australian roads and another community, another family, more friends that are impacted by deaths on our roads and it’s incredibly sad,” WA Premier Roger Cook said.
“Our hearts go out to the families and friends and the community involved.
“Our thanks and appreciation goes to the first responders who are literally there as we speak trying to deal with the aftermath of that particular event.
“Any death on our roads is one death too many so we’ll continue to invest in our road infrastructure funding process to continue to make our roads safer.”
Road safety
The state has recorded 133 road deaths in 2026, the highest number for this point in the year in more than a decade.
Cook said the government will continue to invest in road infrastructure safety projects and education programs for the community.
“We know that funding is at record levels. We know what makes a difference to road safety is increasing the safety features of (roads) — audible edging, centred markers, increase to the width of and the strength of the shoulders and that’s a billion-dollar program that’s taken place over 10,000km of Western Australian roads,” Cook said
“We are now going to the next phase of that program which is high speed local roads and we’re working with the WA Local Government Association to identify the priorities in terms of that program.
“And we’ll continue to do more. We’ve got significant investment in new technology to make sure that we can impress upon people the importance of abiding by the road rules and as I’ve always said we need the community to play its part as well.”
Vehicles ‘in a million bits’
Motorist Josh Osgood drove past the scene of the crash only minutes after the incident occurred, saying the cars had been completely destroyed.
“The vehicles were in a million bits,” he told The West Australian.
“I saw the guys with a medical bag running over to help.
“I hope the kid pulls through.”
Hamelin Pool is a popular tourist destination that makes up part of the Shark Bay World Heritage Area.
It is known for its diverse stromatolites; rock-like structures also called “living fossils”.
