Prince Harry had a hesitation during his latest visit on his trip to the U.K.
The Duke of Sussex, 41, visited young patients at Birmingham Children’s Hospital on Thursday, July 9, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the very first WellChild Nurse. The role was first created in 2006 and designed to support children with complex medical needs and their families, coordinating care between the hospital and home.
Harry has been a patron of WellChild since 2007 and helped to fund the very first WellChild Nurse, keeping the cause near and dear to his heart. During his visit, he chatted with the patients, sharing laughs and listening to their inspirational stories.
Prince Harry only faltered when assigned the task of cutting a celebratory cake. Facing down the raspberry and white chocolate sponge, he debated where to place the knife, joking, “I haven’t cut a cake for a very long time.”

Along with revealing plaques and planting trees, cutting cakes comes up often on royal duties.
Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, 44, stepped back from their roles as working royals in 2020 and relocated to California to raise their children, Prince Archie, now 7, and Princess Lilibet, who was born in the United States and is now 5.
However, the Duke of Sussex has continued to support WellChild’s work and attend events including the annual WellChild awards in the U.K.
Speaking to the room of WellChild executives, nurses and families on Thursday, he said, “I don’t know if you hear it enough, the difference that you make every single day is quite literally changing daily lives.”
“I understand, and we understand, that becomes harder every week with cuts and financial difficulties… just the insanity that seems to be circulating, not just in this country, but in general,” Harry continued. “But hospitals like this don’t run without people like you, and families like this can’t be the families that they want to be at home without the expertise and the skill set that you’re handing over to them, and WellChild is right at the centre of that.”
Speaking to the families as a father of two himself, Harry continued, “The hope through WellChild and the continued support that this country and hopefully, the government, continues to give NHS and the partnership with WellChild provides more opportunities for you to make your lives easier.”
“We can’t solve everything,” he added, “but what we can do is make sure that your lives are more comfortable and that you are trained to be able to take your kids home and not be stuck in the hospital.”

Harry’s grandmother the late Queen Elizabeth occasionally tried to find ways to make cutting a cake more exciting.
In June 2021, the Queen, alongside Kate Middleton and the future Queen Camilla, attended a special reception for the volunteers tasked with organizing her Platinum Jubilee the following year.
When she was asked to cut a cake for the attendees, Queen Elizabeth hilariously chose to use a large ceremonial sword, despite being told that there was a smaller knife available on the table next to the confection.

“I know there is,” she said in response. “This is something that is more unusual.”
After drawing smiles and laughs from Kate, Camilla and the other attendees, the Queen served up a piece she was proud of, noting, “That looks very good.”
