‘Getting harder’: Update on Aussie hero’s cancer battle
The wife of Professor Richard Scolyer has given an update on his battle with brain cancer, saying that “things are steadily getting harder”.
The wife of former Australian of the Year and world-leading pathologist Professor Richard Scolyer says everyday life is “getting harder” as he continues to battle brain cancer.
Prof Scolyer’s wife, Dr Katie Nicholl, uploaded a message and several photos to social media, giving an update on his battle with the disease.
“Things are steadily getting harder for Rich, and time with family and friends continues to be so important for us all,” she said.
“I know we’re not alone in this journey and we appreciate everyone’s continued love and support.”
Their daughter Emily commented: “You and Dad are so strong!”

The post was accompanied by photos of Prof Scolyer with his wife, including one of them looking into each other’s eyes.
The beloved professor was jointly awarded Australian of the year in 2024 with his research partner and Melanoma Institute Australia co-director Georgina Long.
He was diagnosed with the aggressive tumour back in 2023 and was initially given just eight months to love.
He was among the first patients to undergo an experimental treatment for his “incurable” cancer – a fast-growing and highly aggressive cancer.

Professor Scolyer became the world’s first ever brain cancer patient to have combined immunotherapy pre-surgery in the hopes of understanding brain cancer.
He has shared his battle with cancer via his blog “My Uncertain Path”.
In an updated posted in March, he said: “There seems to be further progression of my brain tumour (glioblastoma) affecting brain functioning … Whilst it is a bit disappointing, in the big picture it’s not the end of the road and I’ve got more to do!” he said.
“I love and enjoy challenges. I certainly haven’t stopped yet.”
