Lee Cronin’s The Mummy Drew Mixed Reviews from Critics

Lee Cronin's The Mummy' Review: A Family Under Threat From Within

Cronin’s adaptation of the iconic Universal Pictures story put a new twist on a timeless classic, focusing primarily on demonic possession and exorcism rather than the story of a mummified Egyptian priest. In Cronin’s version, a family is reunited with their daughter years after she goes missing and is eventually found mummified inside a sarcophagus.

As a result of the story changes, critical reception of the film was pretty divided. It currently sits at a 47% approval rating from over 190 critics’ reviews, with some praising the film’s gore and emotional story, but several finding issue with its overly long runtime.

Thankfully, audiences haven’t had nearly as many issues with The Mummy as the critics did. From over 1,000 verified audience reviews, it sits at a 74% approval rating from Rotten Tomatoes users, with a consensus praising the film for delivering “a sarcophagus of gore-heavy horror that, while reliant on familiar tropes, still ekes out intense thrills.”

The Mummy' Premiere Event Set, Launches 'Halfway to Halloween'

The fact that real theater-goers have enjoyed the film so much continues to translate now that the film is available on digital. Its theatrical run saw the film face off against two heavyweight releases: The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and Project Hail Mary. While it wasn’t able to beat them in its opening weekend, Cronin’s Mummy still earned enough to be deemed a box office success, with an opening of $13.5 million and a total run of $89 million.

The fact that The Mummy was able to finish third behind two of the year’s most anticipated films is a testament to Cronin’s storytelling power. Jack Reynor, Laia Costa and May Calamawy led The Mummy‘s cast, with Natalie Grace starring as the young girl who goes missing and returns, mummified.

Cronin’s Next Evil Dead Film Will Follow This Summer

Audiences won’t have to wait much longer to see Cronin’s next film after The Mummy. He serves as an executive producer for Evil Dead Burn, which will arrive in theaters on July 10. It marks the sixth installment in the Evil Dead film series created by Sam Raimi and will be directed by Sébastien Vaniček and co-written by Vaniček and Florent Bernard.

While staying on as an executive producer, Cronin is taking a less hands-on approach for the new Evil Dead film. He previously served as director and writer for 2023’s Evil Dead Rise. Following Evil Dead Burn, another film is planned for 2028 — Evil Dead Wrath — with Cronin also reportedly serving as an executive producer.

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is now available for purchase on the Apple TV store and all other digital platforms.
