A recent University of Northern Iowa graduate is being remembered by educators and community members as a bright and dedicated young woman whose future in teaching was cut short in a devastating family tragedy in Muscatine.

Authorities identified the victim as 20-year-old Ryle McFarland, a May 2026 graduate of the University of Northern Iowa’s College of Education. University officials confirmed she had earned Dean’s List honors during her studies and had recently completed her degree with a focus in elementary education and social-emotional learning.

McFarland had also completed student teaching in the Muscatine School District and was preparing to begin her teaching career at McKinley Elementary School this fall. Faculty members described her as “bright, compassionate, and destined for a promising future in education.”

Her name is among six members of the McFarland family killed Monday in what authorities describe as a domestic violence-related mass shooting spanning multiple locations in Muscatine. Police identified the suspected shooter as 52-year-old Ryan Willis McFarland, who later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after being confronted by officers.
Officials said officers first responded to reports of gunfire at a residence, where four victims were found dead. Two additional victims were later discovered at separate locations in the city as the investigation continued. Authorities believe all victims were related and that the violence stemmed from a domestic dispute.

Muscatine Police Chief Anthony Kies identified the victims at a community vigil as Lesa McFarland, 51; Dakota Whitlow, 32; Austin Harris, 29; Ryle McFarland, 20; Mark McFarland, 16; and Ryan McFarland Jr., 13.
The tragedy has deeply shaken both the Muscatine community and the University of Northern Iowa campus, where staff and students expressed grief over the loss of a young graduate who had only recently completed her studies.
Friends and colleagues of Ryle McFarland remembered her as a hardworking student with a strong commitment to education and children, noting that she had already taken meaningful steps toward her future as a teacher.
The investigation into the shootings remains ongoing as local and state authorities continue to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident. Community members have gathered for vigils and memorials to honor the victims and support grieving families as Muscatine comes to terms with the scale of the loss.
