“The fourth vehicle, travelling at speed, has collided with a third vehicle at a traffic control signal,” Hill said.
“A 62-year-old driver of that vehicle at this point of time [is] responsible for that crash.”
A two-year-old girl in the third car died at the scene.
“What a tragedy that a two-year-old in a family car perished in such circumstances,” Hill said.
The toddler’s four-year-old and 11-month-old brothers, along with a 30-year-old female passenger, were taken to hospital, with the elder child suffering serious injuries.
The 30-year-old male driver of the car was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
The driver and sole occupant of the other three cars – a 40-year-old man, a 30-year-old woman and the 62-year-old man sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The two male drivers were taken to hospital in serious but stable conditions and the female driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The 62-year-old man was arrested at his bedside today, where he remains in hospital under police guard in a stable condition.
