Netflix has not officially announced a season 2 for The Boroughs.

However, the ending clearly leaves the door open for more stories. In the final moments of the Netflix series, Sam notices his reflection glitching in the mirror in the same way Mother’s visions previously appeared throughout the series. Creators Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews shared with Tudum that the scene was intentionally designed to hint at future possibilities and the lingering consequences of Sam’s connection to Mother.

Will Duffer Brothers’ sci-fi series ‘The Boroughs’ return for season 2 on Netflix?

The creators also explained that several mysteries, including the origins of the strange tree inside the Cave of Wonders, were intentionally left unanswered for potential future seasons.

What happens in the finale of The Boroughs?

In the finale of the Sci-fi horror series, Sam and the residents of The Boroughs finally uncover Mother’s true wish: she wants to die and end the cycle of suffering created by Blaine Shaw (played by Seth Numrich) and Anneliese (played by Alice Kremelberg), who have spent decades using her powers to remain young and immortal.

After Wally helps free Mother from the underground lab, Sam escorts her toward the Cave of Wonders beneath the old mine. Meanwhile, Blaine and Anneliese attempt to stop the group, leading Sam to activate the machine he created using old television sets. The device kills Anneliese and severely weakens Blaine.

As Mother reaches the cave surrounded by her children, she unleashes a massive burst of light that kills both herself and the creatures connected to her. Blaine also dies in the explosion after attacking Sam inside the cave.

Before disappearing completely, Mother gives Sam one final gift by allowing him to reunite briefly with his late wife Lilly (played by Jane Kaczmarek). The emotional moment finally gives Sam closure after spending the entire season trapped in grief over her death.

Elsewhere, Judy survives after Mother unexpectedly revives her despite being fatally wounded earlier in the finale. Renee and Paz begin planning a future together, Art reconciles with Judy, and Wally chooses to continue living fully despite his terminal cancer diagnosis.

However, the final scene reveals that Sam may still carry some supernatural connection to Mother after his reflection glitches unnaturally in the bathroom mirror, suggesting the strange forces surrounding The Boroughs may still exist.
