‘I Felt Austin’

For 14 months, Jeff Metcalf was not allowed to speak.

A gag order kept him silent as social media spun false narratives about his son, as strangers made memes and jokes about Austin’s death, and as the family endured death threats, doxxing, and six swatting calls to their home.

But the morning after Karmelo Anthony was sentenced to 35 years for murdering his 17-year-old son at a Texas track meet, Jeff Metcalf finally woke up feeling something different.

“I felt like a million pounds had been lifted off my shoulders,” he told CBS News Texas in an exclusive interview. “This morning was the first day I woke up with a feeling of peace, comfort, tranquility that I haven’t experienced in 14 months.”

He paused.

“And I felt Austin.”

‘Oh God. My Brother. My Twin.’

Throughout five days of trial, Jeff sat in a courtroom just feet away from the teenager who killed his son.

He described it as “challenging” in ways most people will never understand.

But the moment that broke him most did not come from testimony about Austin.

It came from a body camera recording.

“What killed me was the body cam footage when I could hear Hunter screaming,” Jeff said, his voice heavy. “‘Oh god. Oh god. My brother, my twin.’”

Hunter Metcalf had been standing next to Austin when Anthony stabbed him. He watched his twin brother collapse.

“You as a parent always want to protect your kids,” Jeff said. “And to hear my son and the fear in his voice — and I’m not there to fix it.”

‘Pure Unfiltered Rage’

Jeff had been writing in a notebook for months — words he could not speak, feelings too heavy to carry in silence.

At the sentencing hearing, he finally read them aloud. He pounded the podium. He looked Anthony in the eye.

“You failed yourself. You failed your parents. You failed society. You don’t belong in this community.”

But behind the rage was something that surprised even him.

“I had a little bit of sorrow,” he admitted. “Because I’m human. That poor boy is fixing to experience a life that I would not wish upon anyone.”

He did not walk back what he said next.

“He deserves what he gets because we’re all responsible for our actions. But I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.”

‘Forgiveness Was for Me’

Perhaps the most remarkable thing Jeff Metcalf said had nothing to do with the sentence.

He has forgiven Karmelo Anthony.

Not for Anthony’s sake — but for his own.

“Forgiveness was not for him,” Jeff said firmly. “Forgiveness was for me. So I don’t carry the rage, the hate and that around. It will eat me up like cancer.”

He has already vowed to fight any future parole attempt — in person, or on video if he is no longer alive to attend.

A scholarship has been established in Austin’s name. The walls of the Metcalf home are covered in photos and paintings of Austin and Hunter.

And on the morning after justice was finally delivered, Jeff Metcalf woke up and felt his son beside him for the first time in 14 months.

“The lie is temporary,” he said quietly. “But the truth lasts forever.”
