Distressing video has emerged of the aftermath of a police incident in North Queensland where officers fatally shot a family pet after it was struck by their vehicle.

In the vision, shared on social media, witnesses can be heard shrieking as a gunshot rings out − with one woman screaming, “That was a pet!“, as angry residents appear to confront police.

It happened about 3.40pm on Saturday in Pioneer, Mount Isa, as officers in a marked police vehicle were leaving an address on Mill Street at low speed.

Queensland Police said the dog is believed to have come from under or behind a parked car before it was hit.

Neither the driver nor the passenger saw the animal before the impact, police said.

A supervising officer arrived at the scene within three minutes and found the family pet severely injured.

Police said the decision was made to euthanise the animal immediately to prevent further suffering.

“This incident was traumatic for the officers involved, the community and the dog’s owners, however it was considered the most humane and suitable course of action available at the time,” a police spokesperson said.

Senior officers have since spoken with the family.

Queensland Police said body-worn camera footage from the incident has been reviewed and confirmed the dog was significantly injured.

In a statement, authorities said police use-of-force incidents, including the lethal use of force against an animal, are recorded and reviewed by senior officers in accordance with policy and procedures.
