Horrific Brazil bungee tragedy: 21-year-old reportedly survived impact after 131-foot fall as criminal probe uncovers chilling new details
New and disturbing details have emerged in the tragic death of 21-year-old Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, who fell 131 feet in Brazil after allegedly being pushed from a bungee jumping platform without a safety cord attached.
According to investigators and medical testimony, the young woman was not killed instantly on impact and was reportedly still alive for a short time after the fall, deepening the horror surrounding the incident now under criminal investigation.

An off-duty nurse who arrived at the scene told local media that Maria was conscious when she reached her and attempted to comfort her in her final moments. The nurse, identified as Rayza Dias, said she spoke to the injured woman and tried to reassure her before emergency teams took over.
The fatal accident occurred on June 13 at the “Skeleton Bridge” in Limeira, São Paulo state, where Maria had been participating in a rope-jump style activity. Video footage circulating online allegedly shows staff escorting her to the edge of the structure before she was pushed off without the safety rope properly attached.
Seconds later, witnesses realized something was wrong and panic broke out as they saw the cord still on the ground. Screams of shock can be heard in the background of the clip as bystanders shouted that the rope had not been secured.

Emergency responders later arrived at the scene, but Maria was pronounced dead after suffering severe trauma from the fall.
The incident has triggered a full criminal investigation in Brazil, with authorities confirming that multiple individuals connected to the operation have been arrested. Early reports suggest serious failures in safety procedures, with witnesses alleging that staff skipped essential checks before the jump.

Investigators say the equipment intended to secure Maria during the descent was never attached to her harness, an error now central to the case.
Adding to the chilling nature of the tragedy, Maria’s final Instagram Story has resurfaced online. Posted shortly before the jump, it showed the bridge location with a caption that read: “Who was the crazy person who let me jump off a bridge???”

What initially appeared to be a nervous joke has now become a haunting final message widely shared across social media.
Authorities say the investigation is also examining whether the adventure activity was properly authorized and whether standard safety protocols were followed. Several suspects are facing charges related to homicide with implied malice, reflecting allegations that critical safety risks were ignored.

Reports also indicate that Maria’s fiancé witnessed the incident and was left in severe emotional distress following the fall.
As the criminal case deepens, officials continue to reconstruct exactly how such a catastrophic failure occurred at a site now under intense scrutiny, while the circumstances surrounding Maria’s final moments remain the focus of both investigators and a shocked public.
