“He Didn’t Deserve It” — Austin Metcalf’s Twin Brother Held the Wound With His Hands at That Track Meet. What His Family Said in the Days After Is Impossible to Read Without Breaking.
Hunter Metcalf did everything with his brother. Played every sport. Shared every moment. And on a Wednesday afternoon in Frisco, Texas, he was the first one who ran to him — and the last one who had to let go.
The Phone Call No Mother Should Ever Get

Meghan Metcalf got the call from Hunter. He was screaming.
Austin had been stabbed.
By the time she processed those words, first responders were already working on her son at David Kuykendall Stadium in Frisco, where the track meet had turned into a crime scene in a matter of seconds. Austin Metcalf, 17, an 11th grader at Frisco Memorial High School, had been stabbed during an altercation with another student after asking him to leave their school’s tent.
He was transported to the hospital. He did not survive.
“They Had to Yank Me Off Him”
Hunter Metcalf was there. He saw it happen — or nearly did. He said he whipped around as fast as he could, but didn’t see the actual stab. What he saw was his brother going down. And he did what any twin would do.
He grabbed him. He pressed his hands on the wound. He tried to hold his brother together while everything around them fell apart.
When paramedics arrived, they wouldn’t let Hunter in the ambulance.
“They had to yank me off him,” he told WFAA.
He was left standing at the stadium while his brother was driven away. Austin died at the hospital despite lifesaving efforts by first responders. Hunter never got to say goodbye.
“Just Because the Kid Was Mad”

In the days that followed, both Hunter and his mother Meghan spoke publicly about Austin — not just about how he died, but about who he was.
He was smart. He was driven. College football programs had already been looking at him. His goal was to play at the next level, and by every account, he would have gotten there.
“He just had such ambitions and a drive that it’s hard to find in a kid,” Meghan said. “Such a good spirit, and so many kids loved him.”
Hunter described his twin as his best friend — someone he had played sports with his entire life, someone who was supposed to be on the field with him next year and the year after that.
“I had a blast my whole life playing sports with him,” Hunter said quietly. “It’s just really heartbreaking not to see him next year on the field.”
He paused before adding the four words that have stayed with everyone who heard them.
“He didn’t deserve it.”
Their mother echoed the same disbelief that has settled over everyone connected to this case.
“Just because the kid was mad,” she said, her voice breaking, “my son is not here anymore. And I don’t understand it.”
What Comes Next

Karmelo Anthony, a 17-year-old student at Frisco Centennial High School, has been charged with first-degree murder. He remains in custody with no bond set. His murder trial is currently underway, with testimony resuming this week as both sides present their cases to a jury that will ultimately decide whether what happened under that tent was murder — or something the law might call self-defense.
For the Metcalf family, that distinction changes nothing.
Austin is gone. Hunter is still here. And somewhere between those two facts lives a grief that has no name.
