An escaped New Orleans inmate who was captured after a standoff in Atlanta, Georgia, on Wednesday was in court for his initial appearance.
Derrick Groves appeared in magistrate court in Fulton County at 10 a.m.
Groves waived extradition, saying he wanted to “return from where I’m from” to the judge presiding over his hearing.

An extradition date was not set.
Louisiana Attorrney General Liz Murrill issued the following statement on the next steps to coordinate extraditing Groves:
“Today, Derrick Groves waived extradition at his magistrate court hearing in Atlanta. There are ongoing discussions about the next steps to return him back to Louisiana. Those discussions are already underway and require Louisiana State Police to coordinate with law enforcement in Georgia. We will provide additional details regarding his next court appearance in Louisiana as they become available.”
Groves was the last remaining New Orleans inmate on the run after a jailbreak at the Orleans Parish jail in May.
According to Brian Fair with the U.S. Marshals, Groves was captured after a standoff at a residence in Southwest Atlanta.
He was found near the corner of Campbellton Road and Honeysuckle Lane.
Groves was captured after a tip was called into New Orleans Crimestoppers.
According to the U.S. Marshals, after the tip was received, authorities surrounded a home where they deployed canisters into the house and used a K9 officers to capture Groves in the crawlspace of the home.
Murrill said the crawl space in the home was created by someone helping Groves evade detection. Murrill said she will pursue charges against anyone who helped Groves in his escape.
After that, he was taken into custody peacefully.
Video shows the moment Groves was taken into custody and driven away in the back of an Atlanta police car.

Groves will be extradited back to Louisiana and taken to Angola with the other inmates who were captured.

On May 16, 10 inmates, including Groves, broke out of the Orleans Parish jail.
Kendell Myles, Robert Moody, Gary Price, D’Kenan Dennis, Corey Boyd, Lenton Vanburen Jr., Jermaine Donald, Leo Tate, and Antoine Massey are all back in custody.
Here’s everything we know about Groves.
Criminal history:
Groves was jailed on three counts of attempted second-degree murder. He had just been convicted in October 2024 in the case.
Sources close to WDSU confirm that Derrick Groves is the grandson of Kim Groves, who was the center of one of New Orleans’ most notorious murders.
Kim Groves was a 32-year-old mother of three when she was gunned down in the 9th Ward in October 1994. Specifically, the incident occurred along Alabo Street in the Lower 9th Ward. The hit was ordered by corrupt NOPD officer Len Davis.
Groves’ girlfriend, Darriana Burton, is behind bars after allegedly assisting Groves in his escape.
She is facing felony charges for conspiracy to commit simple escape.

Burton is accused of communicating with Groves on an iPad days before his escape.
Smartcom, the program allowing inmates to use iPads, was introduced to the Orleans Parish Justice Center in February.
Online documents released by the Orleans Parish sheriff tout the programs’ success, saying the tablets help give inmates free 15-minute phone calls a day and 20-minute video calls a week. This is all in an effort to reduce overall jail violence, improve the quality of life, and reduce tension among the inmates.

Burton worked at OPSO from August 2022 to March 2023. She was fired for allegedly bringing contraband into the jail.
Her charges were refused by the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office due to Burton completing a diversion program.
