Kate Middleton sported an unexpected accessory at Wimbledon, and the reason has just been revealed.

Photos caught the Princess of Wales, 44, wearing a microphone inside her blue Gabriela Hearst suit when she attended the tennis tournament in London on July 2, sparking speculation about the reasoning behind the recording device.

The answer was revealed on July 8 when the Wimbledon Tennis Championships posted a new video of Princess Kate on social media taking part in the “Overheard at Wimbledon” series, marking the first time viewers heard what was on Kate’s mind during the competition, a staple on her summer calendar.

The video shared snippets of conversation between Princess Kate, All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club chair Debbie Jevans and retired British tennis player Tim Henman as they watched some of the sporting action from the stands.

The trio bantered about how tennis has evolved and the tournament itself in the “Overheard at Wimbledon: Royal Special” video. Then the conversation turned to Kate’s recent completion of the National Three Peaks Challenge, which involves scaling the tallest mountains in each of England, Scotland and Wales in 24 hours.

Princess Kate opened up about completing the mountain challenge, something she took on to fundraise for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity after her own cancer journey, in her own words.

“I think part of the journey was trying to enjoy the process. Like, the training beforehand, but also making time during the walk to meet people and enjoy the journey, rather than just quickly getting to the top,” she said.

Princess Kate also commented on the less-than-ideal weather during her outdoor adventure.

“The weather was atrocious. I mean, everybody got soaked through, but it was a very sort of stoically British thing to do,” she added with a little laugh. “You know, you’re soaking wet, and everyone’s going, ‘Come on, we can do it.’ ”

The Princess of Wales received treatment for cancer at the Royal Marsden Hospital in 2024. She later shared in January 2025 that she was in remission.

She completed the Three Peaks Challenge on June 28 and was met at the end by Prince William, their children Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8, her parents, Carole and Michael Middleton, and her brother, James Middleton.

“I have just been so blown away by all the donations. Everyone’s been so generous,” she told Henman about the Royal Marsden fundraising effort she embraced the feat for.

“That’s what keeps you going; it’s when you know you’re doing it for a good cause — it keeps you going through the harder times,” the Princess of Wales said.

Her attention then turned back to the match between Arthur Fery and Otto Virtanen and tennis player Kate commented that they were watching “some seriously good tennis.”
