TRAGEDY ON THE STREETS OF BRONX: Standing next to his bicycle, a 12-year-old boy tragically lost his life to a stray bull3t — A tearful statement from those close to him!
NEW YORK (WABC) – A suspect has been arrested after a 12-year-old boy riding his bike was fatally struck by a stray bullet outside a New York City bodega.
New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Sunday that detectives arrested 45-year-old William Ferrer outside his home in the Bronx. Ferrer is facing several charges, including murder in the second-degree.
The arrest comes after a fight broke out outside a bodega just before 5 p.m. Saturday in the Mt. Eden neighborhood of the Bronx. Police released surveillance footage that shows a group of men engaged in a fist fight in the street before one of them pulls out a gun and opens fire.
Jacob Freytes, 12, can be seen in video standing over his bike on the sidewalk right next to the fight. Police say he was struck and killed by a stray bullet.

“Jacob was an innocent bystander on his bike when he was taken from his family yesterday in an act of senseless gun violence,” wrote Tisch on social media. “No arrest can ever ease the pain of this unimaginable loss, but the NYPD will continue to do everything in our power to seek justice for Jacob.”
Friends and neighbors are crushed by the death of Freytes, who they called Kai, remembering the 12-year-old as being very helpful. His father reportedly worked for the NYPD.
“We used to go outside to play with the bikes. Kai is a very nice kid. Good kid, nice spirit – told me he wants to play NBA,” Byron De Los Santos said.
“I loved him so much. Why did that have to happen to him? It’s not fair with the guns and gangs out there,” Toby Patterson said.
Two other people, a 34-year-old man and a 25-year-old, were shot in the incident, but both are expected to survive.
