Tony Modra’s close friend reveals the change in the AFL legend’s voice following his horrific accident

In the world of sports, the name Tony Modra has always evoked images of spectacular leaps and gravity-defying marks that ignited AFL stadiums across the nation. Yet, last Thursday, instead of the roar of the crowd, the 57-year-old legend faced a far more brutal “match” against mortality. A freak accident while driving a truck near his cattle property south of Adelaide transformed his life into a source of profound anxiety for fans across Australia.

The Moment a Tree Branch Became a “Scythe”

This was no ordinary traffic collision. As Modra was operating his truck, a massive tree branch suddenly crashed down, piercing the windshield and striking the driver’s side with lethal force. The severe facial injuries sustained by this legendary figure left him in critical condition immediately following the impact.

For those who have followed the AFL for decades, the news that one of the game’s greatest full-forwards—a man who kicked 588 goals in 165 games for the Crows and Dockers between 1992 and 2001—was fighting for his life was a seismic shock. A wave of concern and solidarity surged across the AFL community and beyond, a testament to the enduring love and respect the public holds for “Mods.”

The Journey of Recovery from the “Dark Room”

Recently, Mark Ricciuto—former Crows captain and Modra’s closest mate—offered the first glimmers of hope. While the road to recovery remains long and fraught with challenges, Ricciuto confirmed that the legend has finally passed the most dangerous threshold.

Sharing his thoughts on Triple M, Ricciuto described the harrowing transformation in his friend’s condition: “He’s improving a lot.” However, he could not hide the heartache of hearing his old friend’s voice over the phone: “He did not sound like the old Tony Modra, he sounded like a bloke who didn’t want to move his head — and basically couldn’t half move his head. He sounded completely different at this stage because of all that.”

Despite enduring a battery of painful operations, the hallmark resilience of a champion remains evident in Modra. Ricciuto recounted a deeply moving detail: “But he still had Mods’ sense of humour which was awesome to hear, he was trying to have a laugh in super-tough times.” He added regarding Modra’s current endurance: “He did sound like he was in enormous pain and he is, because he’s had so many operations, but fingers-crossed he’s had his last one there for a little while.”

Perspective: When Laughter is the Strongest Medicine

When asked about the current situation, Ricciuto noted: “He’s out of the worst the woods can be. Now he’s just living with the pain and waiting to get better and dealing with all the emotional stuff that you deal with, I guess, of having an accident and remembering parts of it.”

Yet, perhaps the most quintessentially “Modra” element is his refusal to lose his spark. Even in the midst of agony, his signature wit remained intact: “He said he wants to chop the tree down … we were having a few laughs, that’s typical Modra chat. It was just good to have a little bit of a giggle as much as he could.”

The story of Tony Modra is more than just a freak accident; it is a lesson in fortitude. In life, we cannot always avoid the “branches” that suddenly crash down upon us, but the way we face them—with humor, optimism, and a steel-clad spirit—defines the stature of a true legend. One can only hope that the smile of “Mods” will soon triumph completely over his physical pain, guiding him back to the life he loves.
