Lindsay Clancy’s defense attorney smirked and raised his eyebrows, making his reaction to the prosecutor’s argument unmistakably clear
VETERAN trial lawyer Kevin Reddington has shot to fame with his aggressive courtroom style as he represents Lindsay Clancy.
He rested his case this week arguing that the 36-year-old mom is not criminally responsible for the deaths of her three children due to her mental state.

The high-profile trial has made headlines and become an obsession with internet sleuths as Reddington fights to convince the jury that Clancy was suffering from undiagnosed postpartum psychosis.
On January 24, 2023, she strangled five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and eight-month-old Callan in the basement of their Massachusetts home.
In his aggressive defense of the former nurse, the 75-year-old attorney with a black belt and over 40 years of courtroom experience has become somewhat of a hit with those following the trial.
As he turned up to court on Thursday, he was met with cheers and applause by hundreds of demonstrators wearing pink in support of the killer mom.

“We love you Kevin,” one yelled, as another said, “Reddington is fighting for women’s rights.”
The tattooed attorney who once hurled throwing stars in court and uses brass knuckle dusters as paperweights, is no stranger to high-profile cases and giving an impressive performance in court.
The Clancy case is no different and over the month-long trial, he has had some fiery and noteworthy moments.
Aggressive grilling of Clancy’s doctor
From day one, he has shown no hesitation in aggressively challenging those on the stand, including a particularly relentless cross examination of Dr Jennifer Tufts.
She was the physician who treated Clancy and prescribed various psychiatric medications.
The battle-hardened attorney raised issue with how Clancy’s deteriorating mental health condition was documented by Dr Tufts, even getting a couple of eye rolls from the physician in the process.

He asked the doctor to read back part of her notes about Clancy’s speech and anxiety during an appointment, arguing that her entries were contradictory to her claims about Clancy’s mental health.
“No sleep last night. Falls asleep after 30 minutes, heart racing, severe anxiety, worrying about kids, baby, sleep, yawns but not drowsy. Not hyper, pressured speech,” the doctor read from her notes.
“Not hyper, not pressured speech is what I meant,” she quickly added.
“I didn’t say ‘not’ but that is exactly what I meant…I don’t care what it says, I know what I meant.”
“Well when you wrote this, you did not say, not pressured speech, you said in the medical record ‘pressured speech’ right?” Reddington replied.
“No.”
“Does it say that?” he pushed while calmly standing next to the doctor and showing her the extract.
“I wrote that but you’re misinterpreting my note,” she said as Reddington continued to pressure her and go through the sentence over and over again.
“Yes but your interpretation is incorrect.”
He then walked away from the stand before turning back and quipping, “As opposed to yours?”
Face says it all
On Day 15, as prosecutor Shannon Buckingham objected to some exhibits from the defense arguing that they were disclosed late and inaccurate, Reddington did not even have to speak to have his thoughts known.

He stood by, looking at Buckingham with a smirk and raised eyebrows, visibly dismissing her claims.
The attorney leaned far back in his chair, swivelling it around to point directly at the prosecutor as she addressed the judge.
The judge indicated that Reddington could go on with his arguments, to which he jumped up, clutching one of his exhibits, and approached the projector.
One word interjection
Tensions repeatedly flared in court over evidentiary disputes as the state attempted to block key exhibits.
At one point, a prosecutor stood to object to Reddington’s exhibits being shown the judge and the attorney gave a stone-cold interjection.
“We are objecting to these,” Buckingham told the judge before the defense heavyweight simply said “No.”
“So why don’t we discuss those here in open court and go through it?” the judge told her, denying the prosecutor’s objection, which is when Reddington raised his arms in a satisfied shrug after his point was proven.
Physical command of courtroom
A hallmark of Reddington’s defense in court is his physical command of the room while crucial testimony was being given.
While Clancy’s mom Paula was on the stand recalling how her daughter begged for her to stay with her during severe bouts of insomnia, Reddington stepped away from the stand.
In what is slowly becoming an iconic and repeated style of his, he brought up a huge poster board print out of evidence to support the testimony.

This time it was a printed screenshot of text messages directly for the jury to see.
“Do you have a copy that she could look at?” the judge asked.
“Oh I have a copy,” Reddington replied, before bringing the comically large print out to the stand.
‘Let me finish’
Another clash with the prosecution came with a fiery exchange between Reddington and Buckingham when trying to establish how healthcare systems outside the US treat postpartum depression and psychosis.
Again, Buckingham tried to object to Reddington’s line of questioning, which he quickly quashed.
He turned towards the prosecutor and snapped “Let me finish,” before pushing forward to get a clear “Yes” or “No” from the witness.
Hot on his heels
Another moment showing Reddington’s assertive and dominant courtroom style came when he jumped up to start his argument before the prosecutor had even sat down.
As the judge paused to let Buckingham take her seat, Reddington waited for her to pass the table before jumping up to grill the witness about confirmation bias.
The prosecutor then turned back to collect her papers from the stand.
“Let’s talk about confirmation bias,” he said, before being cut off by Buckingham who said “Can I sit down first?”
‘That’s it?’
One of the most heated exchanges came when Reddington was dismantling digital forensic evidence.
While cross-examining Massachusetts state police sergeant Kyle Pavao, a digital forensics investigator in the cyber crime unit, the attorney threw his arms up in disbelief.
“You’re not able to tell who is actually at the computer doing all of this, correct?” the sergeant was asked by the prosecution.
“No.”
“You can only see what data there is and what has been accessed, correct?”
He confirmed that was true and the prosecution concluded it’s questioning.
“That’s it? That’s your testimony?” Reddington quipped before continuing his cross-examination.

Reddington’s four decades of trial experience have defined every step of this defense, and while he is aggressive and domineering towards attorneys and witnesses, he has a tight connection with Clancy.
At one heartbreaking point of the gruelling trial, he held her hand while she sobbed opening in court in response to harrowing evidence from the scene of the murders.
