A 46-year-old man kicked the driver out of the car and stole the vehicle, then drove erratically along Barrassi Way — before the most heartbreaking ending unfolded

A man has died after stealing two cars, one of which was involved in a head-on collision, in Melbourne’s east.

The man, 46, had already crashed a stolen Subaru when he got behind the wheel of a Ford Mustang near Punt Road and Boulton Parade in Richmond on Saturday night.

The man was ejected from the Mustang during the second crash. Today

It is believed he kicked the driver out of the car before taking control of the Mustang.

The Mustang driver was not in the car at the time of the crash, and was uninjured.

After taking control of the Mustang, the man continued to drive erratically down Barrassi Way near the Melbourne Cricket Ground, before colliding with a Range Rover head-on and a Toyota Camry.

The man was ejected from the car and died at the scene.

A woman who was driving the Range Rover sustained an arm injury and was taken to hospital, and the other driver wasn’t injured.

Police believe the Subaru the man was initially driving was stolen on August 20 from Glen Iris and was wearing fake numberplates.

They are also investigating whether the same car was seen driving in an unsafe manner in Clarendon and Whiteman streets before the first crash.

It is believed the man was seen driving erratically in the Richmond area before 9pm, where he collided with two cars, including the Mustang he eventually stole.

The Subaru was reportedly travelling on the wrong side of the road at the time of the collision.

Brunton Avenue remains closed to traffic as police continue their investigations.
