Prince Harry, Meghan Markle and their two children — son Prince Archie, 7, and daughter Princess Lilibet, 5 — remember Princess Diana on her birthday and death anniversary in a “sweet” way.

The Duke of Sussex, 41, attended Scotty’s Summer Festival at Maxstoke Castle in Warwickshire on Saturday, July 11, marking his final public outing amid his current trip to the U.K.

During a Q&A session with some of the 200 children and their family members at the event, Prince Harry was asked by a teenager, named Sebastian, if he does anything special to commemorate the anniversary of his mother’s death, Aug. 31, or her birthday, July 1.

“Yes, we do lemon drizzle cake,” Harry told the 16-year-old, whose father, Rev. John Hill, served in the Royal Navy and died in June 2010.

Prince Harry is the Global Ambassador for Scotty’s Little Soldiers, a British charity that supports bereaved military children and other young individuals. The cause is important to the Duke of Sussex, a former captain in the British Army, whose mother died when he was 12.

Prince Harry said that routinely making a lemon drizzle cake in honor of his mother — who was killed at age 36 by injuries sustained in a car crash in Paris in 1997 — means a lot to him.

“I think traditions are really, really important,” he explained, adding: “Especially when they’re sweet.”

Prince Harry has spoken openly throughout the years about dealing with grief following his mother’s death.

During the InterEdge Summit at the CENTREPIECE venue at Melbourne Park in April, when Harry served as a keynote speaker on workplace mental health, he said, per PA Media, “In my experience, loss is disorienting at any age.”

“Grief does not disappear because we ignore it. Experiencing that as a kid while in a goldfish bowl under constant surveillance, yes, that will have its challenges. And without purpose, it can break you,” Harry added.

“There have been many times when I’ve felt overwhelmed,” he continued. “Times when I’ve felt lost, betrayed or completely powerless. Times when the pressure — externally and internally — felt constant. And times when, despite everything going on, I still had to show up pretending everything was okay, so as not to let anyone down.”

“For many years I was numb to it, and perhaps that was easier then, but I also didn’t yet have the tools to deal with it,” Prince Harry further stated.

Prince Harry, Meghan, 44, Archie and Lilibet had a landmark reunion with King Charles and Queen Camilla this week, in a meeting that marked the first time the Duchess of Sussex and the children have seen the royal couple in person in four years.

The King, 77, and the Queen, 78, hosted the Sussex family at Highgrove House, King Charles’ private country home in Gloucestershire, on the afternoon of July 10.

No photos or further details are set to be released from what was considered a private family meeting.

Harry and Meghan changed their plans to visit the U.K. as a family this week after an extraordinary back-and-forth with the palace about the security arrangements that would be in place for them.

Prince Harry ultimately continued with the planned itinerary alone, and it’s thought that the family may visit Princess Diana’s childhood home, Althorp House, where she is buried.
