What began as a desperate search for a missing 4-year-old girl has turned into one of South Carolina’s most disturbing child homicide investigations.

Authorities now say Javeayah Harris had been dead for weeks before she was ever reported missing, and investigators allege her parents went to extraordinary lengths to conceal the crime before alerting police.

Massive Search Began After Parents Reported Her Missing

On June 30, Javeayah Harris was reported missing from her family’s home in Aiken, South Carolina.

The report sparked an enormous search involving local, state and federal agencies. Officers searched thousands of acres by land and air while digital billboards displayed the little girl’s photograph across the region, urging the public to help locate her.

Investigators initially believed the child had disappeared that evening.

Investigation Took a Devastating Turn

As detectives continued gathering evidence, they concluded that Javeayah had likely died weeks before she was reported missing.

Authorities arrested Johmarea Harris, 23, and Michilae Herring, 22, charging both with homicide by child abuse.

Herring was also charged with filing a false police report after investigators determined the missing child report was allegedly fabricated.

Sheriff Reveals Chilling Allegations

During an emotional press conference, Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer announced investigators had uncovered evidence indicating the child’s remains had been deliberately destroyed.

According to investigators, corrosive chemicals and other tools were allegedly used in an effort to accelerate the destruction of Javeayah’s body before portions of her remains were disposed of in a South Carolina reservoir.

Sheriff Sawyer later announced an additional charge of destruction and desecration of human remains.

“I have never, ever heard of anything so horrific,” Sawyer said, describing the investigation as the most disturbing case he had encountered during nearly four decades in law enforcement.

Emotional Tribute From Investigators

Standing before reporters wearing pink ties and ribbons—Javeayah’s favorite color—Sheriff Sawyer became visibly emotional while discussing the case.

“I will not refer to them as ‘mom and dad,'” he said of the defendants.

“They don’t deserve that title.”

Investigators believe extensive efforts were made to conceal evidence, and authorities acknowledge there may be little chance of recovering all of the child’s remains.

Investigation Continues

The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office says detectives continue searching for additional evidence while working closely with prosecutors to prepare the case.

Authorities are asking anyone with information that could assist the investigation to contact law enforcement.

The allegations against the two defendants remain unproven, and both are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
