Lindsay Clancy told an FBI forensic psychiatrist that she first heard the voice telling her to kill her children while she was making them dinner after her husband called her from the pharmacy.

However, Dr Gregory Saathoff who is testifying on behalf of the prosecution, noted that she had told Dr Margaret Spinelli that she heard it almost as soon as Patrick left the home at around 5.15pm.

Tensions flared in Clancy’s murder trial on Tuesday morning as defense lawyer Kevin Reddington clashed with forensic psychologist Dr Kirk Heilbrun in court.

Reddington sparred with Dr Heilbrun over his review of Clancy’s medical records, raising his voice as he asked: ‘Did you really read those records? Seriously?’

Hours earlier, Reddington exploded at a journalist who was filming him outside of the Plymouth Superior Court. ‘You, let me tell you something,’ the defense lawyer said.

‘You are a biased weasel. Go read what you say about my case. Go read about that guy with the bald head yesterday. You said the jury was eating it up. Stay away from me,’ he declared, referring to prosecution witness Dr Heilbrun.

Clancy, 36, is on trial for the murders of Cora, five, Dawson, three, and eight-month-old Callan, at her home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in 2023.

She strangled the children with exercise bands and then allegedly attempted to kill herself, but her efforts failed and left her paralyzed and in a wheelchair for life.

Clancy has admitted to killing her children but pleaded not guilty to murder by reason of insanity, citing postpartum psychosis, and is seeking to be committed to a state mental health facility rather than face a prison sentence.

Psychiatrist shares new details about Clancy’s account of killings

The forensic psychiatrist revealed new details about Clancy’s version of the killings.

Clancy told him that her hallucination – the voice – occurred when she was standing at the refrigerator.

She said she was making the children their dinner when Patrick called.

He had called at 5.33pm but she missed it and called back one minute later.

After she returned the call, she said she then heard the voice.

However, Dr Saathoff testified that she had told Dr Margaret Spinelli that she heard it almost as soon as Patrick left the home at around 5.15pm.

She also told some experts that the children would suffer if she did not kill them as well as herself – but had not said that to him.

The voice was ‘very clear’ ‘came from outside her head’ and was ‘constant.’

The voice repeated ‘over and over and over again’ while she was killing her children. Then it stopped when she had finished killing the children, he said.

Saathoff describes order which Clancy killed the children

Clancy said that, after calling Patrick, that was when she took Dawson down the stairs into Patrick’s office to strangle him.

Cora and Callan were left upstairs.

Clancy said she could not recall what she said to him to get him to come downstairs or if he resisted.

She then went up to get Cora, bringing her into the living room area of the basement.

After killing Cora, she then she went back upstairs to get Callan.

She could not remember where she had left Callan during that time.

Clancy’s hair is covering her face so it is difficult to see her reactions to this.

‘Dr Resnick described Ms Clancy as a puppet but the children were not puppets,’ Dr Saathoff testified.

He referred to how active the children were in footage of them at a water park and museum.

Psychiatrist pokes holes in Clancy’s story

Dr Saathoff appears to be poking holes in Clancy’s story about what happened that day – pointing to inconsistencies in her accounts to different people.

He is also laying out the prosecution’s argument that she planned the killings and intentionally sent Patrick out of the home so that she could carry them out.

Dr Saathoff testified that Patrick told him they had never gotten takeout from 3V – but they had from several other places nearby.

They had eaten there before though and liked it, he testified.

The order that she made those decisions was not what Clancy said.

Instead of starting by asking her husband if they should get takeout, he said that she did a lot of searching for the restaurant and the route first.

Clancy looked into the Miralax for Cora and CVS after 4pm but did not mention the importance of picking it up until just before he left, he said.

‘She also added on that errand right before he left,’ he said.

‘It lengthened the trip. It added one extra obligation for Patrick and that would make for a longer time that he was away,’ he said.

Psychiatrist discusses Clancy’s command voice

It’s not typical for someone in psychosis to hear the voice only one time or to hear a constant voice rather than intermittent, Dr Saathoff testified.

Clancy said it was the ‘same thing in the same tone repeated over and over and over until she had strangled Callan,’ according to the psychiatrist.

Committing the act is not curative of the voice, he added.

Several jurors are taking down notes. Reddington is also making notes at the defense table.

At 5.33pm when Patrick called, Clancy said she was at the refrigerator door and was getting chicken nuggets out for the children, according to Saathoff.

But Patrick testified that Dawson was eating chicken nuggets on the couch when he left.

Dr Saathoff interviewed Clancy over Zoom

Dr Saathoff was asked by the state to do an evaluation of Clancy.

He reviewed her medical and mental health records – from both before and after the killings – as well as grand jury materials and videos of interviews with Clancy and footage of the family.

He also interviewed Clancy by Zoom twice – for around six hours on May 29 and five hours on June 4, 2023.

He admitted that there are always ‘limitations’ when a review is carried out over Zoom rather than in person.

Clancy was ‘very pleasant, very responsive to questions that I asked,’ he said.

He also interviewed Patrick Clancy.

Saathoff also noted that the district attorney’s office did not pay him directly; instead, it paid his employer, the University of Virginia, and he receives a salary from the school.

FBI psychiatrist discusses psychosis

Dr Gregory Saathoff explained that psychosis is a symptom of mental illness and not a denied mental illness, because there can be many causes of it.

‘There are many different roads that can lead to psychosis,’ he said.

This question seems to be a pushback against the point that Reddington has repeatedly made about PPP not being listed as a separate condition in the DSM.

Final witness called to the stand

The prosecution called Dr Gregory Saathoff, a senior psychiatrist with the FBI’s behavioral analysis unit, to the stand.

As part of his work, he has treated and evaluated female inmates who killed their children.

He has treated thousands of patients with psychosis both in the prison population and at a teaching hospital where he said some of the most severely mentally ill patients were committed.

He testified that he has also written articles about PPP.
