A British husband desperately searching for his newlywed wife who went missing in the deadly floods in Nepal shared her final words to him before she vanished.

Pramod Poudel, 34, flew to disaster-zone to find his wife Sumitra, 25, who has been unaccounted for since last Wednesday. The husband revealed he spoke to his wife just hours before the catastrophic floods – believed to be caused by a glacial collapse in the Himalayas which sent rock, ice and meltwater into valleys below, triggering powerful floods.Nepal-born Pramod said the last words he heard from his wife before the floods were: “I love you so much.”

Nepal’s Foreign Ministry said 590 foreign nationals from 39 countries remain missing after the August 26 disaster that killed at least 1,118 people and left more than 3,900 missing. 36 Brits are thought to be missing in Nepal, with another 15 reported by the Chinese authorities in neighbouring Tibet, bringing the total to 48.

Pramod said he last spoke to his wife at 4.15pm UK time last Wednesday but said the call cut out and he was not able to reach her again. The husband said he called his aunt who revealed the horror floods had hit.

He married Sumitra in June and she had moved to the Nepalese village of Sole to live with Pramod’s family while he returned to the UK for work. Pramod, a British citizen who lives in Uckfield, East Sussex, was born and raised in Sole and moved to the UK when he was 18 years old. He revealed his wife, his mum, brother and uncle are also missing after the floods battered their village.

He flew out to Nepal on Friday and started his trek to his village, after the floods destroyed a bridge that led to Sole. Pramod, before flying to Nepal, spoke to the BBC and said: “It’s a very, very difficult time for me and for my family and my country at this moment, but obviously I have to go and see what’s happening there.”

Under-Secretary of State at the Foreign Office Lord Wood of Anfield, on Tuesday, told the House of Lords that the number of British people missing due to the floods has risen to 36, up from 33.

Some tourists previously reported missing in Nepal have made contact with authorities, officials said. Five Australians were confirmed safe overnight and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the number of Australians missing had fallen from 43 to 38.

Sunil Sharma, a spokesman for the Nepal Tourism Board, said at least five tourists who had been reported missing had contacted authorities by email or telephone in recent days.
