Former Terrafirma Dyip import Khapri Alston has died following a shooting incident in Dolton, Illinois earlier this week, according to reports.
Alston, who reinforced the Dyip during the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup, was 31 years old.
A report by FOX 32 Chicago said the former professional basketball player was with his girlfriend at a cigar lounge before a confrontation reportedly escalated into gunfire late Thursday night in the United States.
Police said Alston was shot near East 115th Street and South Martin Luther King Drive. He was later declared dead.
Authorities confirmed that one person is currently in custody, although no formal charges have been announced as of writing. Alston’s family has called for a thorough investigation into the case.
“We are crushed and devastated. We can’t believe this happened. He was so well-loved and liked not only in Chicago but across the United States,” said Shenier Alston, the victim’s father, in an interview with FOX 32 Chicago. “My son is not a casualty. We want justice.”
Known for his athleticism and rebounding ability, Alston played for Terrafirma when the franchise still carried the Columbian Dyip name.
The 6-foot-3 forward out of Midwestern State University averaged 28.5 points, 18.2 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.3 blocks in 11 games for the Dyip.
Despite Alston’s strong numbers, Columbian failed to advance to the playoffs after ending the conference with a 4-7 record.
Outside the Philippines, Alston also saw action in several overseas leagues, including stints in Chile, Indonesia, Uruguay, Argentina, Bolivia, and the United Kingdom.
