CAMERA CAUGHT: King Charles and Queen Camilla Make Their First Royal Appearances Following Harry and Meghan’s U.K. Return — But One Small Detail About Camilla Has Everyone Talking.

The King and Queen attended joint and individual engagements on Wednesday after spending time out of the public eye at Balmoral

King Charles and Queen Camilla stepped out for several royal engagements on Wednesday, Sept. 2,
The King attended a garden party celebrating the Victoria League for Commonwealth Friendship and met with Pakistan’s national cricket team, while the Queen visited the London headquarters of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) before they jointly viewed the Bayeux Tapestry exhibition at the British Museum
The outings were the royals’ first public events since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s U.K. return

King Charles and Queen Camilla stepped out for several royal engagements on Wednesday, Sept. 2, marking their first appearances since Prince Harry and Meghan Markle returned to the U.K.

The King, 77, attended a garden party celebrating the 125th anniversary of the Victoria League for Commonwealth Friendship, of which he is a patron. The organization, started in 1901, supports and houses students from across the Commonwealth as they study in London.

The British monarch also met with Pakistan’s national cricket team during an audience at Clarence House, his longtime home in London.

Meanwhile, Queen Camilla, 78, visited the London headquarters of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), of which she is a patron. She met with dancers from a variety of classes, including specialty programs for dancers 55 and over, students from less-fortunate backgrounds and dancers undergoing cancer treatment.

During her visit, the Queen also presented the Queen Elizabeth II Coronation Award to Christopher Wheeldon OBE.

Then, the King and Queen jointly visited the British Museum to view an exhibition on the Bayeux Tapestry, the iconic piece of art that depicts the Norman conquest of England through the Battle of Hastings. The royals were joined by French President Emmanuel Macron, first lady Brigitte Macron, U.K. Prime Minister Andy Burnham and his wife, Marie-France van Heel.

The display marks the first-ever time that the tapestry has been loaned from France to the U.K. since its creation. In exchange, the U.K. agreed to send several national treasures to France for display, including items from the Sutton Hoo burial.

The King and Queen’s outings come just a few days after Harry, 41, Meghan, 45, and their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, touched down in England, one week after announcing their decision to move back to the U.K. for an extended period.

The couple plans to establish a private, non-royal home in the U.K., with the kids set to start school this month. They have retained their home in Montecito, Calif., as well as a vacation property in Portugal.

For King Charles, the move raises the possibility of something he has long hoped for: reconciliation between Harry and his brother Prince William.

“He will want to see his sons together over time,” a source close to the royal household told PEOPLE in last week’s cover story. “This is the best opportunity we have seen in recent years.”

Prince Harry’s return to the U.K. comes shortly after a reunion with his father. In July, they had a private gathering at Highgrove, where King Charles saw Meghan and their children for the first time in more than four years.

“That was a real positive,” an ally told PEOPLE.

The day of outings for King Charles and Queen Camilla marks a return to royal work after spending time out of the public eye for their royal family’s annual gathering at Balmoral Castle in Scotland. Prince William, Kate Middleton and their children — Prince George, 13, Princess Charlotte, 11, and Prince Louis, 8 — were among the royals who headed to Balmoral for the late summer escape.

Balmoral has been the British royal family’s go-to spot during the summer ever since the reign of Queen Victoria, whose husband, Prince Albert, purchased the property in 1852. Just as Prince William did growing up, his three children will likely splash in the River Dee while exploring the outdoors at the expansive rural estate, where days are filled with activities like hunting, fishing and horseback riding.

“It was a life of picnics and paddling around,” Margaret Rhodes, Queen Elizabeth’s cousin, once said.
