Country music legend Dolly Parton died after a brief battle with cancer, representatives for the star have revealed.
The 80-year-old was admitted to Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center in Nashville on Friday and died four days later, surrounded by loved ones.
The type of cancer has not been disclosed.
“After bravely facing a brief battle with cancer, Dolly departed her Earthly life today at the Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center surrounded by loved ones,” her representatives said in a statement.
“Our beloved Dolly Parton spent her life and career bringing joy, laughter, hope and integrity into everything she touched. Her unmatched generosity reached the lives of countless people whom she would never meet, yet she was always there to offer a helping hand.
“Whether it be the hundreds of millions of books donated through her invaluable Imagination Library or funding research that helped create a lifesaving vaccine used around the world, Dolly’s unconditional love for all people was the guiding force for her lasting impact.”
Parton had reportedly been dealing with kidney and autoimmune health issues before her death.
She died on Tuesday, local time, after a remarkable rise from humble blue-collar beginnings to become one of America’s most beloved musicians and philanthropists.
Her nephew and longtime head of security, Bryan Seaver, confirmed the news in an emotional video shared to social media, revealing Parton had asked him years earlier to make the announcement when the time came.
“Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus, surely met by Carl, her parents, and countless others who have watched her and longed for her to meet them in the heavens,” he said.
‘I’m still healin’, I’m still workin’’
Her death comes just a year after her husband, Carl Dean, died, ending a marriage that spanned almost six decades.
The couple met outside a Nashville laundromat on Parton’s first day in the city and married two years later in 1966.
As her face became known around the world, Dean guarded his privacy. He rarely attended public events with his wife, but remained a constant presence behind one of entertainment’s most enduring careers.
After his death, Parton acknowledged that caring for Dean had led her to neglect her own health, and she was forced to withdraw from numerous scheduled appearances while undergoing medical procedures.
‘I still have so many things I want to achieve’
But even as her health declined, Parton remained determined to work.
Just four days before her death, she spoke about the projects she still hoped to bring to life and the health problems she had placed aside while caring for Dean.
“As I’ve shared in video messages throughout the past year, I am dealing with some health issues that I just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over Carl,” she told PEOPLE.
“You know, this isn’t the first time I’ve had to manage something like this. Back in the early ’80s, I was down for several months with female issues, and I was struggling with my weight at the time too, so it’s not like I haven’t been through hard times with my health.
“Even though I’m still healin’, I’m still workin’! You know me — as I’ve often said — I’ve dreamed myself into a corner, and I still have so many things I want to achieve, so I’m gonna keep on working as long as I can to see everything come to life.”
