Five chilling words Lindsay Clancy said to her husband after k!:lling her three young children are haunting the public with their terrifying coldness
The forensic psychologist who was presented as a rebuttal witness in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial had ruled out that she had suffered from acute psychosis when she killed her children.
Prosecutors called Dr. Kirk Heilbrun to the stand on Monday, and he pointed to Clancy’s first words of “I tried to kill myself” to her then-husband, Patrick, as a statement inconsistent with psychosis.
Patrick had returned home to find Clancy injured and their three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and 8-month-old Callan, dead at their home in Duxbury, Massachusetts, in January 2023.
When Patrick asked her what she had done, she responded, saying, “I tried to kill myself.”
She is accused of strangling her young children with exercise bands before she allegedly attempted to end her life by slitting her wrists and neck with a knife before jumping from a second-story window. The alleged attempt has left her paralyzed for life.

Heilbrun had presented two possible reasons that Clancy may have killed her children, with one being that she may not have wanted them to suffer after she died, or she was experiencing acute psychosis.
Heilbrun said that Clancy’s statement of “I tried to kill myself” was inconsistent with psychosis, saying someone experiencing hallucinations may instead have said, “I did what I had to do” or “I did what the voice said.”
Clancy admitted to killing her children, but entered a not guilty murder plea by reason of insanity due to postpartum psychosis.
Heilbrum had previously evaluated Clancy during a three-day period in April 2026 and told Plymouth Superior Court that he diagnosed Clancy with Bipolar II disorder, but said she had not experienced manic episodes.
Heilbrum had testified that she went through depressive episodes, and added that it was hard to reach a diagnosis for her, but added that she responded well to the medications she was prescribed to treat the condition.
He also described to the court how Clancy said she heard a male voice in a singular instance during the approximately 18 minutes of the murders, which said to her, “This is your last chance. You have to kill the kids so you can kill yourself.”
Heilbrun said that the timing of the voice’s appearance was unusual and may be a way to diminish her responsibility in the deaths.
He also said that Clancy gave “inconsistent” accounts of what the voice told her to do.
