Human remains have been found in the search for a South Australian man who has not been seen since January this year.

Joshua Clifton Demell, 39, was last seen at Port Augusta on January 23, 2026.

His abandoned motorbike was found about 13km away near Yorkey’s Crossing the following day.

Police conducted several searches of the area but failed to find any signs of Mr Demell.

They returned to the area this week with help from mounted operations and State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers.

Human remains were discovered on Friday morning outside the initial search area.

Superintendent Josh Heinze told ABC on the day Mr Demell went missing Port Augusta was experiencing extreme heat, with temperatures in the mid-40s.

“It is too early to confirm the identity of the human remains,” a police spokesman said.

“They will be sent for forensic testing and police will hopefully have an answer soon.”
