An unexpected twist in the Lindsay Clancy trial leaves attorney Kevin Reddington furious and demanding that a juror be removed

A JURY note threw the Lindsay Clancy courtroom into chaos on Thursday as her lawyer raised his voice to the judge and demanded the removal of a juror.

The turmoil unfolded shortly after the jury returned from lunch still deadlocked with a question for the judge about the meaning of reasonable doubt to convict Clancy.

Defense attorney Kevin Reddington and Judge William Sullivan went back and forth at the sidebar, where the attorney shoved papers back at the judge.

Jurors were then sworn in one by one and briefly questioned, something only done two other times in the trial – first when supporters gathered outside the courthouse and secondly when a woman was arrested outside the courthouse for allegedly filming jurors.

After the jury was excused, Reddington asked the judge to remove a member of the jury, telling the court there is “one juror who refuses to listen to the law on reasonable doubt.”

Reddington later slammed the judge for asking jurors what he finds an insufficient question when swearing them in, because it fails to lay the foundation for a motion to remove the juror.

“I suggest respectfully that the soft instruction that you gave them saying at the sidebar ‘Can you listen to the law as I instruct you,’ does not focus on the issue. The question is not sufficient enough.”

“If we come back here in a half an hour with a mistrial because of a juror that has just spurned the instructions of this court, it’s a shame. It’s a real shame,” he snapped, adding he requests further inquiry.

The jury has been deadlocked for a few days, telling the judge they have yet to reach a unanimous decision. They were sent back to deliberate on Thursday before leaving for the day at 4pm.

If the juror believes the prosecution could not prove their case beyond a reasonable doubt, they could acquit her.

Reddington argued to jurors that Clancy was suffering from undiagnosed postpartum psychosis when she strangled her children, Cora, Dawson and Callan, on January 24, 2023.
