Neighbours said the home had all but been destroyed in the fire.

A hero father has rescued his three young children from a raging house fire, with detectives now investigating whether the blaze is suspicious.

The family-of-five ran for their lives after their home in St Albans, northwest Melbourne, became consumed by flames about 7.20pm on Sunday.

A mother, father and their three young children, including a one-year-old baby boy, managed to escape the inferno.

Nearby residents rushed to help as firefighters tackled to bring the blaze under control.

“I saw the dad pulling the kids out, screaming call for help. Call for help,” neighbour Miralem Ekic said.

“It was wild, I haven’t seen anything like that before.”

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the reality of how much damage the fire had cause quickly set in.

“Three small kids makes it worse,” neighbour Rennae Bailey said

“Having to start over, they’ve lost everything.

“Like, they don’t know what to do or where to go.”

The family had only moved into the government-owned house a few months ago.

Authorities are now trying to figure out the cause of the fire.

“They don’t know where it started. He thinks an electric heater that fell over,” Bailey said.
