A child has been reported missing after entering Lake Michigan and three divers have been injured in the rescue efforts.
Officers from the Michigan City Police Department were dispatched to Washington Park at 5:38 p.m. local time on Monday, June 22, to reports of a possible drowning, according to a Facebook statement from the force.
Bystanders said they saw the kid, who was wearing red shorts, enter Lake Michigan and never resurface, prompting an immediate response from several emergency responders, including the Michigan City Fire Department and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Police said the child went underwater along the east side of the catwalk and just south of the lighthouse.
“Multiple divers” from the emergency services went into the water, but “challenging water conditions significantly impeded search operations,” per the post.
“During the operation, three divers from the Michigan City Fire Department sustained minor injuries and were transported to Franciscan Health for medical treatment,” it said. “An Indiana DNR diver was also injured and evaluated by EMS at the scene.”

After hours of searching, the teams decided to suspend dive efforts due to “hazardous conditions” that posed a “substantial threat to the safety of responding personnel.” Divers from the Michigan City Police Department will continue to help the Indiana DNR find the missing child when the search resumes.
“Powerful currents, changing waves and limited visibility below the surface can quickly become dangerous, even for experienced swimmers and rescue personnel,” the police statement said. “Please pay attention to beach conditions, obey all posted warnings, and stay out of the water during hazardous conditions.”

The Indiana DNR said there were “4 to 6‑foot waves” while searching for the child in an email sent to PEOPLE.
“At the time of the incident, the National Weather Service had issued both a Beach Hazard Statement and a Small Craft Advisory due to strong winds, waves and dangerous rip currents,” it said in a statement.
Officials will continue rescue efforts on Tuesday morning if the conditions improve.
