Now, his mother, Ahmani Hicks, says information provided to her by investigators has left her struggling to come to terms with not only how her son died, but what allegedly happened in the moments afterward.
According to Hicks, police told her that surveillance footage shows Marcus leaving an apartment building on South Carpenter Street late that night. Walking behind him, she says, were several people Marcus considered friends.
What happened next changed everything.
Hicks says investigators informed her that one of those individuals allegedly shot Marcus twice in the back before fleeing through a nearby alley. The gunfire reportedly struck the teenager’s lungs.

According to Hicks, the video indicates that after the shooting, several people who had been nearby ran back into the apartment building while Marcus was left wounded in the alley.

According to Hicks, a group chat involving some of Marcus’s alleged friends included conversations identifying the suspected shooter and discussing what had happened after the shooting. Some participants allegedly talked about seeing Marcus on the ground and whether they should check on him.
Hicks also claims portions of the conversation appeared to have been deleted.
The revelations have only deepened the grief felt throughout the family.
Marcus had recently completed eighth grade and was looking forward to celebrating his 15th birthday. Instead, loved ones found themselves preparing for a funeral.
His death has also had a profound impact on his brothers, who Hicks says have struggled with nightmares and emotional outbursts since the tragedy. Returning to normal life, including football practice, has been difficult.
Despite the pain, the family has found support through Marcus’s football community. Members of the Midwest Hawks Youth Football organization have rallied around them, visiting their home, bringing groceries, and helping them navigate the devastating loss.
