A mother has admitted to killing her 15-month-old child after the toddler was allegedly placed in a tote bag inside a freezer for two weeks.
Ochra Manakaja has been indicted on more than 20 charges on Thursday, including two counts of murder.
She reportedly contacted emergency services in Arizona about 9.30am on Sunday to advise them of the child’s death.
“I killed him,” the 32-year-old told the dispatcher, according to local news organisation Arizona’s Family.
When police arrived at the hotel where Ms Manakaja was staying, they found the body of a toddler wrapped in a tote bag inside a plastic box.
The child’s temperature was recorded as 26 degrees Fahrenheit (-3 degrees Celcius).
Two other children were with the mother, aged seven and nine, but were unharmed.
According to court documents, she has been charged with one count of first-degree felony murder, one count of second-degree murder, two counts of child abuse likely to produce death or serious physical injury, sixteen counts of child abuse not likely to produce death or serious physical injury, and one count of abandonment or concealment of a dead body.
Ms Manakaja told police that she was so frustrated with the crying toddler on April 29 that she threw him out of his crib.
The police said that, afterwards, the boy became weak and pale and started throwing up, stopped eating, and was “not acting by himself”.
After he developed a fever on May 1, Ms Manakaja did not take him to hospital out of fears of getting in trouble.
The boy was found unresponsive and attempts to wake him with a cold rag were unsuccessful.
Ms Manakaja, who was on probation for a DUI at the time of the Lchild’s death, told police she believed her son died after choking on his vomit.
After returning from a mandatory drug test, she wrapped the body in a blanket, covered him in plastic, taped him up, and left him in the freezer for two weeks.
The other children were told the toddler was receiving medical care during that time.
Ms Manakaja admitted to police that she had “f..ked up” and had shown remorse for her son’s death.
County Attorney Ammon Barker said the case had rocked the community.
“One of the most important responsibilities of the criminal justice system is protecting vulnerable members of our community, especially children,” he said.
“We recognise the profound impact of this case and will continue to pursue this matter with the seriousness and care it deserves.”
