Mother-in-law knocks over the meal tray and screams “Get out!”: The final straw that triggered a family tragedy

PART 1: THE DECAYING WALLS AND THE TORMENT IN THE DARKNESS

In a certain poor city, at a certain street corner, where rows of level-four houses covered in moss and road dust were always immersed in the heavy sighs of deprivation, a family existed as a blot of time. There was no warmth of kinship there, only an atmosphere thick with autocracy, where supreme power belonged to the mother-in-law—a woman widowed early, bearing an angular face with dry wrinkles like rotten tree bark, and eyes that were always prying, waiting to judge.

The daughter-in-law had stepped into that house during a dreary rainy season many years ago. She had no dowry, no backing family background, carrying only a sincere heart and diligent hands with the aspiration to build a peaceful home. Yet, that dream was quickly crushed beneath the heel of contempt. In the mother-in-law’s eyes, she was never a child in the house, but merely a free servant, a “parasite” even though she was the one who exhausted her strength to shoulder the entire family economy.

The husband—her only son—lived in a shelter so protective it distorted his personality. He was a spineless man, used to clinging to his mother’s skirt, cowardly before every upheaval, and completely indifferent to his wife’s humiliated tears. Every passing day was a mental torture for the daughter-in-law. She had to wake up before the streetlights went out, toil away in society, and then rush back to prepare every meal offered to the ancestral altar and serve the two of them like a slave.

All her forbearance was taken for granted. The more silent she was, the more the mother-in-law pushed forward, viewing her endurance as weakness to torment her at will. She found every way to humiliate her from the smallest details of daily life, turning every meal into a trial where she was always the sinner bearing the grave crime of being born at the poor starting line.

PART 2: THE SILENT STORM BENEATH THE OLD ROOF

Tension accumulated day after day like a spring compressed to its absolute limit, waiting only for a small spark to explode. On a sweltering summer evening, when the outdoor wind stood still and the air was suffocatingly heavy, the old chandelier flashed a yellowish light cast down upon the wobbly dining table.

That day, the daughter-in-law had just endured an exhausting day of work under the scorching sun of the city, her entire body aching, her mind spinning with hunger. She managed to finish a simple meal consisting of a few frugal vegetable dishes scraped together from her meager salary, then served it on the table, inviting her mother-in-law and husband to dine.

Yet, just as she sat down in her chair, the mother-in-law intentionally dropped her chopsticks, producing a dry, piercing sound. She glanced at the meal with an expression of ultimate contempt, curling her lip to utter venomous sarcastic remarks, criticizing the food for not matching her taste, scolding her as clumsy, useless, and a waste of food for this family.

The husband sitting beside her not only failed to defend his wife, but instead joined his mother, showing disgust and blaming her for not knowing how to care for the family. His gaze towards her was icy cold, devoid of marital affection, as if she were merely an obstructive nuisance in his life.

Her patience, the grievances suppressed over so many years finally reached the breaking point of collapse. The daughter-in-law raised her head, looking straight at the two people sitting before her; her eyes no longer held fear or supplication, but instead a terrifying coldness. She spoke up to defend her own dignity, gently exposing the truth about who was truly the parasite and who was bearing this hollow family.

Those honest words and that feeble resistance were the final straw, touching the false pride and dictatorial nature of the mother-in-law. Her face distorted with anger, and a fury erupted, burning away all remaining reason.

She stood up abruptly, swinging her hand to strike a decisive blow against the steaming tray of food. The tray of food flew high into the air, scattering bowls, plates, and vegetable soup all over the old floor with sharp, shattering sounds echoing throughout the cramped room.

Veins bulging maliciously on her neck, her bloodshot eyes glaring fiercely at the paralyzed daughter-in-law, the mother-in-law pointed a direct finger at her face, screaming the most venomous and cruel words:

“You insolent wife, get out!”
