Fleeing into the bush after murdering two police officers and spraying obscenities at them, Dezi Freeman sent one final text to his wife.

After killing two police officers investigating alleged child sex offences, Dezi Freeman sent a message to his wife as he fled into bushland.

Last seen running down the hill in the direction of a river, Freeman wrote: “See you in heaven love.”

New details about Freeman’s actions and why police attended his property were aired in the Coroners’ Court on Monday morning at an early hearing in a coronial probe.

The court was told there would be two separate inquests, one into Freeman’s murder of two officers on August 26 last year and a second into the killing of Freeman on March 30.

Detective Leading Constable Neal Thompson, 59, and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart-Hottart, 35, were gunned down by Freeman after they arrived at the Porepunkah property where he lived to serve a warrant for alleged historical sexual offences.

The hearing began with State Coroner Liberty Sanger acknowledging the loss of life and pain felt by family members of the two officers, their police colleagues and the wider community.

She said her role would be to examine the circumstances surrounding the events on August 26 and identify if something could be done to prevent similar events from taking place again – including by probing the actions of police in the lead-up.

Several senior Victoria Police officers, including homicide squad boss Detective Inspector Dean Thomas, attended the hearing in a show of support for their fallen comrades.

Also in attendance were family members of Constable Thompson, including his two sisters Dianne Thompson and Lois Kirk.
