Federal defense attorneys for rapper Pooh Shiesty are making a renewed push for his release from custody after a judge postponed his high-profile trial until early next year.

The rapper, whose legal name is Lontrell Williams, has remained behind bars while several of his co-defendants have been granted pre-trial release. Williams’ legal team filed a formal motion for bail on Thursday after the court rescheduled the trial date from July 6 to Feb. 22, 2027. The delay stems from the complexity of the case, which involving seven total defendants and various allegations including kidnapping and robbery.

Williams is accused of involvement in an incident earlier this year where federal prosecutors allege he and others robbed and kidnapped rap mogul Gucci Mane. Despite the gravity of the charges, Williams’ attorneys argue that their client should be allowed to prepare for his defense from home rather than a jail cell. “Lontrell needs to be out so he can fight for his freedom,” attorney Kent Schafer said in a statement.

Schafer characterized the prosecution’s case as weak and questioned the reliability of the evidence presented thus far. As part of the bail application, the defense proposed several strict conditions to ensure Williams’ return to court. The artist has agreed to wear a GPS monitor for 24-hour surveillance, submit to regular drug testing and adhere to rigorous travel restrictions. Additionally, the proposal includes a mandate that Williams avoid all contact with his co-defendants and any alleged victims in the case.

The filing also took aim at the prosecution’s star witness, Gucci Mane. Defense attorneys alleged that the mogul has shown a lack of cooperation and has been seen publicly wearing the jewelry that was reportedly stolen during the incident. They argued these actions undermine the credibility of the kidnapping and robbery claims. While Williams’ father and fellow rapper Big30 have already secured their release pending trial, the court has previously viewed Williams as a higher risk.

A judge has not yet ruled on the new motion, but the defense team expressed optimism that the new trial timeline justifies a change in his custody status. The case continues to draw national attention due to the status of the parties involved and the unusual nature of the allegations within the hip-hop community.

If convicted on the federal charges, Williams could face a significant prison sentence.
