A shocking discovery has been made in rural bushland not far from where a woman went missing earlier in the week.

Police have released footage of the moment they arrest a 48-year-old man, accused of murdering a mother who had been missing since Wednesday.

Officers detained the man, from Harristown, in the early hours of Sunday in connection with the disappearance of Jana Armstrong.

Remains, believed to be those of Ms Armstrong were found on Saturday evening, with her sister saying she had a “completely broken heart” after the discovery close to where she was last seen.

Faith Isaacs had been waiting anxiously alongside other family members for news about her sister, 30-year-old Jana Armstrong, who was found after disappearing from her home in Toowoomba earlier in the week.

On Sunday morning Ms Isaacs said there were “no words to describe the heartbreak and devastation”.

“Losing my beautiful sister this way is something I will never be able to understand or put into words,” she said.

“I want to sincerely thank every single person who has messaged, called, shared Jana’s posts, searched for her, offered support and held us in their thoughts. The love and support shown for my sister and our family has been overwhelming, and I will never be able to thank you all enough.

“My beautiful Jana deserved so much more. She was so deeply loved and will be missed beyond words. I promise you, Jana, your beautiful baby boy will always know exactly who his mummy was, how deeply you loved him and just how incredibly special you were.”

Police were called to Esk Hampton Rd about 10.39pm on Saturday night, where officers say “remains were located”by a group who had been out pig hunting.

“The remains are yet to be formally identified; however, investigators believe they are those of Jana Armstrong, who was reported missing from Newtown after she was last seen on July 7,” police said.

“Investigators are in contact with Ms Armstrong’s family. Forensic examinations are continuing.”

The man, arrested in West St in Harristown, was charged with one count of domestic violence murder.

He will appear in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Monday.

Ms Armstrong was reported missing by members of her family, who made an emotional plea to the public earlier in the week for help finding their relative.

Ms Armstrong’s brother Sam Davison said he didn’t believe had “just wandered off,” and her sister, Faith Isaacs, said there was “no way” she would voluntarily leave her four-month old son behind.

“There’s no way she would do that. She wouldn’t leave her son,” Ms Isaacs said.

“I just lost my daughter six weeks ago and they were supposed to be growing up together… but now she’s not here and Jana’s not here.”

The 30-year-old’s white Hyundai Kona was found unlocked and parked in the middle of the road on the corner of Jellicoe St and Gordon Ave in Toowoomba at 6am on Wednesday.

On Sunday, Darling Downs District Detective Acting Inspector Brian Collins said the vehicle’s movements would likely form “a significant part of the investigation”.

“This is a horrific crime… people in the community would be horrified. It’s good for the community to be aware that (alleged) domestic and family violence does occur,” Detective Collins said.

He also confirmed no prior domestic violence orders had been placed on the man who was arrested, and Ms Armstrong had never alerted police of any concerning behaviour.

Detective Collins said the man had been in custody of the child during his first interview as a potential witness early on in the investigation.

“He obviously had some involvement with the child… it’s unclear how much.”

Ms Armstrong has a four-month old child who police say is now being cared for by her sister.

Investigators have requested anybody with CCTV or dashcam footage taken by drivers along Esk Hampton Rd and the New England Hwy between Toowoomba and Esk on the days of July 7 and July 8.
