Horror Inside Burning Home: 8 Family Members Found De-ad After Authorities Say Father Opened Fire on His Own Family
A West Michigan community is reeling after authorities say a man shot and killed his wife and six children before turning the gun on himself.
The horrific scene was discovered Friday when firefighters responded to a home in Grand Haven Township, a community on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, after reports of smoke coming from the building.
As crews extinguished the fire, they discovered the bodies of eight people, KTLA sister station WOOD-TV reported.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but deputies said it appears to have been intentionally set in multiple locations throughout the home by Kristopher Karolkiewicz after he killed his family. Family pets also died in the blaze.

The Ottawa County Sheriff’s Department said Monday that autopsies determined all the family members died of gunshot wounds, and that Kristopher Karolkiewicz took his own life.
“The investigation shows that this was a murder-suicide,” Capt. Jacob Sparks wrote.
Authorities identified the deceased as Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47; Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39; and their six children, who ranged in age from 5 to 15.
The couple met while working at a beverage company in 2008 and began dating that summer, according to a parenting blog Mandy Karolkiewicz kept more than a decade ago.
Their first child was born April 25, 2011, a day she described as “the best day of my life (so far).”
The blog frequently reflected Karolkiewicz’s Christian faith, her joy in her family and her appreciation for her husband and his parenting. “My kids have that actual example of a selfless, Christ-like father,” she wrote in 2015.
Kris Karolkiewicz also praised their life together.
“I’m a very lucky guy,” he wrote in a 2019 Facebook post ahead of their 10th wedding anniversary.
Members of the local community expressed shock as they remembered the family.
“He was very funny,” one student recalled of one of the children. “He can dish jokes, he can take them. I’ve been over to the house a few times and his whole family is just awesome.”

Another student remembered Amanda Karolkiewicz, known as Mandy to those close to her, as “kind and caring.”
In a statement, Grand Haven Area Public Schools said it would provide support for grieving students, staff and community members. Mandy Karolkiewicz frequently worked as a substitute teacher at Peach Plains Elementary School.
“Our Buccaneer family grieves alongside all those impacted by this tremendous loss. Please continue to care for yourselves and one another as our community processes this news together,” Superintendent Kristin Perkowski said.
