An ‘insanely sinister and eerily realistic’ Netflix crime drama has rocketed up the charts as viewers raved over a string of twists that ‘keep you guessing’.
The Crystal Cuckoo is a Spanish drama based on Javier Castillo’s 2021 novel El cuco de cristal.
The six-part series landed on the popular streaming service on November 14, and follows the story of a young woman called Clara Merlo who travels to a fictional Spanish town called Yesques to find out more about her heart donor.
‘Hoping to learn more about her heart donor, a young doctor arrives in a mountain town where decades of mysterious tragedies plague the small community,’ Netflix’s synopsis reads.
It stars the likes of Catalina Sopelana, 33, Alfons Nieto, Álex García, 44, Itziar Ituño, 51, Tomás del Estal and Iván Massagué, 49.
The programme has received rave reviews and according to Metro, it had already managed to land in the top 10 of the global charts at number six last week.

Author of the book Javier also took to Instagram on November 16 to share that the series hit the top spot on Netlix.
‘The Crystal Cuckoo is NOW the most viewed series on @netflix and I couldn’t be happier,’ he said.
Many have taken online to share their positive reviews about the show, with one from Heaven of Horror saying: ‘It features an insanely sinister and eerily realistic serial killer story that feels like something you could just as easily have come across on the evening news.’
Meanwhile otherse rushed to IMDB to share their thoughts.
‘The plot developed well as the present is illuminated by the past, unsolved mysteries slowly come to light and get resolved by the end of the series.
‘The characters are well developed as their past lives come to light revealing the reasons for them being the people they are today. Overall, well written, well acted and well directed.’

Many have rushed online to share their rave reviews about the Spanish drama – with one saying that they ‘highly recommend’
‘I like Spanish TV series. The Crystal Cuckoo is also a Spanish series and takes place in a small town. Watching Itziar Ituño in this show is a great pleasure. It’s a horror series, and the script is very well written.’
The directors of the drama are Laura Alvea and Juan Miguel del Castillo.
Meanwhile Jesus Mesas and Andres Roig adpated the novel for the big screen.
Protagonist Catalina Sopelana took to Instagram at the start of November to share some snaps from the show.
She wrote: ‘This Friday we premiere: The Crystal Cuckoo adaptation of the novel from @netflix on @javiercordura.
‘Here is a small part of the amazing team that made it possible.
‘There are so many obvious ones left. Tremendously grateful for this opportunity and very eager to see what it looks like.’
Meanwhile author Javier took to his social media page to share his excitement with fans.
‘Today El Cudo De Crystal arrives on Netflix and it’s an incredible dream that one doesn’t get used to,’ he wrote.
‘And that you are the ones who have brought it here, and hopefully now, much furhter.
‘The truth is, it’s a weekend plan, and we’ve organised ourselves to be able to celebrate and watch it together without sins.
