Mademoiselle Holmes, the “quirky” crime drama set in the world of Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes stories, is now available to stream in the UK. Focusing on a descendant of the legendary detective, this new take on a classic is worth a watch.

The French-language series follows Charlie Holmes (Lola Dewaere), the great-granddaughter of Sherlock. Like her ancestor, Charlie possesses a brilliant mind, and uses it to good effect as she solves various crimes.

Featuring Tom Villa and Daniel Prévost in supporting roles, the series premiered in its native France in April 2024, but it has finally found a streaming home in the UK after six episodes were added to Channel 4 under the Walter Presents label.

A second season premiered in France back in February, but that isn’t available in the UK yet. Given it’s taken over a year for the first season to hit Channel 4, it’s likely the follow-up won’t be added until next year.

“Timid cop Charlie Holmes inherits Sherlock’s brilliance after an accident. Can she crack complex crimes like her revered ancestor?” reads the logline for the series, which was created by Victoria Spennato.

Channel 4

The crime drama has received a generally positive response from viewers and fans thus far, with IMDb currently reporting a decent average user rating of 6.3 out of 10 from 338 reviews.

“We love the actress in the lead role here, Lola Dewaere… I like the animation of the characters in French productions and the pace of the dialog is another feature that makes these series so interesting to me,” wrote one user.

“I largely enjoyed the first season of this French Sherlock Holmes spin-off,” wrote another viewer. “The emphasis is on quirky comedy [rather] than about the mysteries… I would recommend this series for those who enjoy shows like Death in Paradise.”

Another user was also full of praise, writing: “The premise is simple yet engaging, the sets are gorgeous, the direction is superb, and the score is beautifully crafted. This one’s a winner so far, and I’m finding a bit of everything to like in this light crime drama.”

Mademoiselle Holmes isn’t the only project on Doyle’s works to hit the small screen in the past year, with Sherlock & Daughter – which stars David Thewlis and Blu Hunt – being released in April.
