Mike Tindall has let slip that the Princess of Wales is “uber competitive” when they play beer pong, adding that the royals still play the drinking game at parties. The former England Rugby Union player said that the Royal Family usually swaps beer for prosecco and that he’s played the popular drinking game, which sees participants attempt to land a ping-pong ball into a cup of booze, with members of the Firm at parties.

Mike, who is married to Princess Anne’s daughter, Zara, made the revelations while chatting about how competitive the Royal Family is in sport. His wife won a team silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics in equestrian eventing, and his mother-in-law also competed at the 1976 Olympics.

Meanwhile, the Prince and Princess of Wales’s competitive streak comes out during royal engagements, where they go head-to-head.

“Sport is rife throughout the [Royal] family – everyone is competitive,” Mike told Woman & Home Magazine. “We did a podcast [with William, Catherine, and Princess Anne] on how much they love sport.

“I knew that the Princess of Wales was uber competitive because I’d seen her play a drinking game called beer pong, but normally we play prosecco pong! She still plays it with us.”

Beer pong is a popular drinking game in which two opposing teams take turns throwing a ping-pong ball across a table into cups filled with booze, traditionally beer. If a ball lands in a cup, the defending team must drink it and remove it from play.

The winning team clears its opponent’s cup the quickest.

Sitting in the Green Drawing Room at Windsor Castle, the royal couple chatted about their competitiveness when it came to sport.

Catherine confessed that she and William had never managed to finish a game of tennis, as “it becomes a mental challenge between the two of us.”

The princess also shared her love of cold water swimming, adding: “the colder, the better”.
