After the long-awaited private reunion between King Charles, Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet at Highgrove House, many had hoped the meeting would mark a turning point in repairing family relations. However, just days later, attention unexpectedly shifted to a new development involving Meghan Markle.
While Buckingham Palace only confirmed that the family gathering had taken place and declined to release any further details or photographs, several royal commentators have suggested that what happened afterward may indicate the distance between the two sides has not truly narrowed.
According to commentary cited by several media outlets, Meghan reportedly did not have a separate private meeting with King Charles beyond the family reunion itself. That detail has led some royal experts to question whether an important opportunity to improve relations may have been missed.
Former royal butler Grant Harrold told the Express that if Meghan and the King had been able to spend additional time speaking privately, it “could have been a huge step” toward rebuilding their relationship. Other unnamed sources and commentators have also suggested that the King may have been disappointed with how events unfolded, although none of those claims have been confirmed by Buckingham Palace or representatives for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Harry had originally planned to travel to Britain with Meghan and their two children. However, ongoing concerns over security arrangements meant Harry travelled to the UK alone to attend his Invictus Games engagements. Meghan, Archie and Lilibet were later reported to have travelled to Gloucestershire for the private reunion at Highgrove House, but they did not attend any public engagements during the visit.
The meeting marked the first time King Charles had seen Archie and Lilibet in person since 2022, making it one of the most significant family moments since Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties.
Even so, beyond confirming that the meeting took place, Buckingham Palace has made no further comment regarding what was discussed or the current state of family relations. As a result, claims that the King was “sad and disappointed,” or that Meghan’s decisions have complicated reconciliation, remain opinions from commentators and unnamed sources reported by the media—not facts that have been officially confirmed.
