Investigators report a shooting in north Houston left a 50-year-old man dead and a 24-year-old injured during a chase to recover a stolen truck.

HOUSTON — A 50-year-old man was killed and a 24-year-old man was injured after they were shot while trying to track down a stolen truck in north Houston on Saturday, according to investigators.

The shooting happened near Airline Drive and the North Loop.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began shortly after 2 p.m. at a gas station near Tidwell Road and John Ralston Road. Deputies said an armed suspect carjacked a man and stole his truck.

Investigators said the stolen truck was equipped with a GPS tracker. After the truck was taken, the owner contacted his 50-year-old father for help locating it. A 24-year-old friend also joined the search.

Authorities said the father eventually located the truck near Airline Drive and the North Loop and crashed into it. The father and the younger man then chased after the suspects on foot.

Deputies said both men were shot near a gas station during the pursuit.

The 24-year-old was shot in the back but survived and is expected to recover, investigators said. The 50-year-old was transported to a hospital, where he later died.

Detectives said they are questioning several people, but have not said whether any of those individuals are the two suspects they believe were involved — a man and a woman.

Nearby resident Morgan Parsons said she heard multiple gunshots before stepping outside.

“There was a body on the ground and it was just panic,” Parsons said. “A lot of people involved, a lot of screaming and crying. Intense is all I could say.”

Parsons said the violence was heartbreaking for those who witnessed it.

“It’s just heartbreaking and weighs you down,” she said.

Investigators are asking anyone with information to come forward. Authorities said surveillance video from the gas station could help identify the suspects.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Houston police dispatch originally reported this as a road rage shooting.
