The former Duchess of York was once close to her ex-husband, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor.

Sarah Ferguson and Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s unique family dynamic continued long after their 1996 divorce, according to a royal author. The former Duke and Duchess of York may have lost their royal titles now and been effectively shunned from royal life, but their relationship has always sparked interest among royal watchers.

Andrew and Fergie divorced in 1996, but they maintained a good relationship as they raised their two daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie. In 2008, the duo moved into Royal Lodge together, where they lived until early this year, when they were forced to vacate due to their scandal involving Jeffrey Epstein.

Now, a royal author who has previously spent time with the Duchess has given insight into the unique dynamic between Andrew and Fergie.

Ingrid Seward told the Mirror: “I remember on one occasion a long time ago I was with her and [Andrew] rang up and she stood up and said, ‘Hello husband’.

“He wasn’t really her husband at that point as they had separated, but that’s how they’ve always seen each other.”

In 2024, Ms Ferguson gave an interview to The Times, and spoke about how she “will never let Andrew down”.

She told the newspaper: “I was totally and utterly in love with Andrew. I would do it all over again, 100%.

“He’s the best, a great man with a great heart, and kind. Our wedding was the best day of my life. But I gave up my anonymity that day. I was able to because love conquers all. It’s still with us today.

“I won’t let him down. He supports me as much as I support him. He’s supported me through thick and thin, not just marriage or divorce.

“We agree on the three Cs — communication, compromise, compassion.”
