An American man has died after being pulled from the water at a popular beach.

The man, in his 40s, was spearfishing with a man, 20, when they became caught in a rip at Shelly Beach in Manly, on Sydney’s northern beaches, at 2.50pm on Tuesday.

Emergency services were called to the scene and found the American man floating near the beach unconscious.

Paramedics performed CPR on the man, but he later died at Northern Beaches Hospital.

The man was believed to have been picked up by a Northern Beaches Council lifeguard on a jet ski and taken to the beach for treatment.

A witness told Daily Telegraph he saw a jet ski pick up the two swimmers, with one unconscious.

‘I couldn’t tell if the people were together or not, but one was certainly unconscious,’ he said.

The 20-year-old was uninjured.
