Innocent Woman Killed After Massive 70–80 Round Ambush at Hammond Chevron Station as Police Confirm Target Was Mistaken

A tragic case of mistaken identity has left a 50-year-old woman dead after a violent ambush at a Chevron gas station on Highway 190 in Hammond, where masked gunmen opened fire on a vehicle in what investigators describe as a targeted attack gone fatally wrong.

The victim, Patricia Shepard, had just finished her shift and accepted a ride home from a colleague when she was unknowingly caught in a deadly chain of events. According to police, neither Shepard nor her coworker had any idea that their vehicle was already being tracked by two armed suspects.

Investigators say the attackers had been following the car due to a prior individual who had been inside it earlier. That intended target, however, had already exited the vehicle well before the shooting took place. Authorities now believe Shepard was never the intended victim, but instead became a tragic casualty of mistaken identity.

Deadly Ambush at Chevron Station

The shooting unfolded at a Chevron station along Highway 190 when the driver briefly went inside the store. At that moment, two masked suspects emerged from a white vehicle, which police have identified as a car reported stolen in McComb, Mississippi.

Without warning, the suspects opened fire on the parked vehicle in a sustained barrage. Investigators estimate that between 70 and 80 rounds were discharged in the attack, turning the scene into chaos within seconds.

Shepard was struck and killed in the vehicle during the ambush, while her colleague inside the store was spared from the gunfire. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Confirm Target Was Not the Victim

Hammond Police Chief Edwin Bergeron confirmed that the attack was not random, but a deliberate act aimed at a specific individual who was no longer present.

“This was a targeted incident,” Bergeron stated, emphasizing that the suspects had been pursuing a different person associated with the vehicle earlier in the day. However, due to a critical error in timing and identification, Shepard became the unintended victim.

Authorities believe the gunmen either did not realize their target had already left the vehicle or mistakenly believed he was still inside when they carried out the attack.

Ongoing Investigation and Manhunt

The investigation remains active, with detectives following multiple leads, but no arrests have yet been made. Law enforcement officials are working to trace the movements of the stolen white vehicle and identify the masked suspects responsible for the deadly shooting.

Police have urged the public to assist in the investigation, stressing that community information could be crucial in bringing those responsible to justice.

Authorities Call for Public Assistance

Officials are asking anyone with information about the incident or the suspects to come forward. Tips can be submitted to Detective Dustin Williams of the Hammond Police Department at 985-277-5755. Anonymous information can also be provided through Crimestoppers at 1-800-554-5245.

As the investigation continues, authorities have reiterated their commitment to identifying and apprehending those responsible for what they describe as a brutal and senseless act of violence.

For the family of Patricia Shepard, however, the search for answers continues amid grief, as a routine ride home ended in a devastating tragedy that has shaken the community and raised serious concerns about escalating violence in the region.
