A mother accused of killing and consuming part of her son ‘clearly loved the boy’ and must have had a ‘psychotic break’ to allegedly cannibalise him, a source says.
The 32-year-old mother, who can’t be named due to laws against identifying child victims of crime in NSW, handed herself in at Wyong Police Station on July 4 and alleged she had eaten parts of the four-year-old.
Police went to the community housing complex on Blake Street that afternoon and found the boy with critical and confronting injuries. The mother was arrested and charged with murder.
A source close to the family, who didn’t want to be identified, told the Daily Mail that neighbours were horrified when police arrived at the complex and walked into the woman’s unit.
When they started knocking on residents’ doors at about 5pm, everyone wanted to know whether the ‘sweet, cheerful’ and Spider-Man-obsessed little boy was okay.
Neighbours had seen him with his mother just two days earlier, on Thursday afternoon, and heard nothing at all from the unit after that.
Without detailing the situation, police had told residents: ‘He’s not okay. He’s gone.’
Through tears, the source said the situation was difficult to comprehend because – while the mother was ‘a little different’ and had a binge-drinking problem – she had a job, went to the gym, and tried to make her son’s life as comfortable as possible.

They recalled the mother made sure her son was eating properly, cared for, and went to school.
There was nothing to indicate the boy was being physically abused, they added.
‘I don’t want to defend her – there’s no excuse [for what she allegedly did], but I know she loved him and she wanted the best for him. I never saw bruises or anything on that child,’ they said.
‘You get these people who are evil and thrive on harming their children, but that’s not her.’
The source said the four-year-old did not behave like an abused child. When he was sick or upset, he always ran to his mother for comfort.
‘Everything she did showed that she was a mum who loved her kid, and he responded as a kid who didn’t show any fear,’ they said.
‘He loved and adored his mum, he was always giving her kisses and cuddles, and he did not act like a kid who was abused.’
The source insisted there was ‘no way’ the mother was conscious of what she was doing when she allegedly consumed parts of her son’s body.

They said things started to decline when the mother took what was meant to be a temporary break from work and never returned.
Mother and son were seen out and about, but it appeared to an outsider as though she was struggling.
She didn’t drink every day, they said, but binge-drinking was a problem.
‘When she drank, she turned into a different person,’ they said.
They remembered the little boy as a kind, considerate and thoughtful child who appeared genuinely loved and cared for – making the circumstances of his death all the more unfathomable.
In Wyong Local Court on Wednesday, prosecutors attempted to get a court order for forensic investigators to test samples of her saliva, blood, nail clippings and debris under her fingernails.
She did not appear in court, but was represented by a Legal Aid lawyer who requested a two-week adjournment to look at the case.
That matter was adjourned to August 14.

The Mail previously revealed the mother struggled with addiction from the age of 13.
A relative said she was regularly smoking cannabis and drinking alcohol as a young teen, before moving on to pills and gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB) as an adult.
The relative said the mother had used ‘uppers and downers’ and alleged she was ‘using GHB’ when her son was killed.
Relatives in her hometown of Gunnedah, north-west NSW, also told the Mail last week that she had a stint in rehab, which social services were aware of.
It was previously revealed that social services were concerned the boy suffered neglect because of his mother’s suspected drug-induced psychosis.
The mother of one has appeared in courts in Gunnedah, Mount Druitt and Penrith.
According to court documents seen by the Daily Mail, police will allege she killed her son.
Her matter is back in Wyong Local Court on September 1.
