There was evidence of a huge fire at the scene at Ornamental Lake, Southampton Common, Southampton, police said.

The force believe Ernst, a Polish national, was living off-grid on the common and he was known to the area’s homeless community.

Detectives have now released CCTV of a woman they believe could help their probe.

Two men were previously arrested in connection with the incident but they have since been released on bail.

Hampshire Police said: “We believe the woman in this image, who was seen walking a dog on Southampton Common on the morning of Saturday 6 September, might be able to help us.

“We would urge her, or anyone who knows her identity, to please get in touch with us at the earliest opportunity.

“It is possible that this woman has already been previously spoken to by investigators. However, as part of new information received and further developments in our investigation, we would like to speak to her once more.

“If you were also in the area of Southampton Common on the morning of Saturday 6 September, please get in contact with us.

“We are particularly keen to hear from any dog walkers who are still yet to come forward.

“No matter how small or insignificant you think the information may be, it could be key to our investigation.”

Releasing a touching statement through the force, Ernest’s, 45, relatives hailed his “humour and lightness” in life.

They said: “Ernest, you were a modest, but dream-filled brother and son. Every meeting with you was unforgettable.

“Your smile, accompanying humour and the lightness, with which you conducted the conversation, made people want to be with you.

“The whole family always missed you and were waiting for you, waiting for your arrival.

“You chose the life you wanted; you were both the ship and the captain for yourself.

“Be happy now. We thank you for all the fulfilled moments, for every phone call, for every sign that you remembered us.

“See you soon, your Family.”
